I haven't had any in so long I wouldn't know what to buy. I don't care for overly sweet or anything to tart. We usually buy white wine and enjoy that..except for this one bottle we bought..it was a rather dry wine...we fed that to the sink.:D..anyway..we want to try something different..got any suggestions?

I'm like you...I'm not much on red wine!!

HOWEVER.....I love this stuff...Riunite Lambrusco Emilia. It is a soft red wine that is not sweet but is not dry either!! And it falls into the 10-20 dollar range, I believe. FYI...it is best if served chilled, but not bad at room temperature either!!

Merlot is pretty full-bodied. You'll have to try different brands to find the exact taste you like, but try it.

Alot of the reds I drink are the heavy types Merlots etc

but the best reds are some of the blends of two grapes...

    Pinotage - Ruby Cabernet
    Pinotage - Cinsaut
    Merlot - Ruby Cabernet
    Merlot - Pinotage

as for make or winemakers to look for, not well up on what you can get in the USA, but I would recomend anything from these few Hardy's, Kumala, Wolf Blass, Henry Estate as a few off my head plus alot of the Chilean wines.

Fed it to the sink!!! Sacrilege!! The only decent white wine is dry. :p )

But if you want a fairly gentle red wine go for a beaujolais - a good-ish one will smell of raspberries and taste of summer fruits <drools> :p :p :p

I must be thinking of a COMPLETELY different Riunite Lambrusco. The stuff I've had (under duress) was vaguely carbonated, was so sweet I could've used it to draw flies, and was available at the 7-11 for less than five bucks. T'was one of the most foul things I've ever put in my mouth.

As for good red wine ;), I second a Beaujolais. Yellowtail Shiraz is pretty darn tasty, too. If you go with Merlot (which I love), it's far too easy to get a bad one, but if you stick to the $15-$20 range you should be ok.

Penfolds Grange Hermitage if you have the money, it's only $400.

Whatever you get, make sure it's Australian, it helps our economy. :)

As i'm sure we can all agree...everyone will probably say something different about the exact same wine!! LOL

I am not a wine afficionado by ANY means, and am perfectly satisfied with a ten dollar bottle of whine, as opposed to something for 100 dollars that has been sitting in a dark, danky basement (oops...meant to say "wine cellar":) ) for 20 years!!

The only reason I even have/know of what I suggested, is because a friend brought it over one evening and left 3/4 of it here, so needless to say, I had a couple of glaases in the meantime!! I didn't notice any carbonation of any such, and compared to other red wines I've had, that tasted like super, duper, overly sweet cool-aid, and to the other extreme, those that make your mouth feel like you're sucking on cotton balls...I thought this had a good balance, and it is cheap!!

But that's my opinion from someone who doesn't really know diddly about wines, except for, if I like it or not!!!!:)

You have that right Roger.... even same grape variety wines from two different winemakes can taste vastly different, depends on a multitude of things from soil type to the barrels they are matured in and then then your taste pallet,

leaves the question how do you fine a wine you may like... apart from buying and drinking loads ;) sometimes wine merchants or retailers ( Costco ) have taste sampleing days, other than that its tasting wines at friends and parties or just jumping in and hopeing recomendations are to your likeing :)

I've been meaning to here in Indiana, but Big Red Liquors has a wine tasting festival every year. I have been to two beer tasting festivals.

Though, I prefer beer, I have had quite a few different types of wine. But, typically I'll just drink the cheap box stuff ($15-$20). The most expensive wine I have bought was $100 and drank in a sitting. Personally, after 3 glasses, they all pretty much taste the same. :)

I have been to Italy to try out their wines (use to be in the Navy).

Usually if I am buying a bottle, I go to the store tender and tell them what I am serving it with and what I want out of it. I like sweet but not too sweet. I don't like anything dry and I don't want anything with a big kick to it. He usually goes and gets me something .... always seems to be fitting too. :)

That's probably the flavour of their toe jam coming through. Don't they crush the grapes bare foot?

The worst wine I ever attempted was Brandivino. That was in high school, don't even think they make it now?

Cheap and nasty, exactly what every school kid needs to turn them off alcohol.

Reading this thread reminds me of a tour I took one time of a winery in Branson, MO. It was very interesting. They took us through the whole process from the grapes clear through to the bottling process. At the end they took you into their tasting room where they let you taste a little of everything. They only gave you about a shot sized portion of each one, but apparently there was no limit to how many times you could take the tour. At the other end of the bar, there were two seventy-something women that had apparently tested the policy. I noticed they were getting substantially larger portions than anyone else. They were also fairly aqquainted with the tour guide as they'd been through four or five times they'd said (neither was sure which). By the end of the session they were barely on their barstools, but still managed to find their way back to the beginning of the tour after that one was over. It was hilarious!! To this day I still chuckle to myself when I see a bottle of Stone Hill wine.

Ya know...I was gonna put a blurb in my initial post that read something like this " Anyone suggests MadDog and I'll ban ya just on principal" but thought better of it...guess it's a good thing under the circumstances eh?:D

What's up wid dat Billy Ray? Oh wait! I get it! The one hit wonder would have extreme difficulty living in the shadow of a rocket scientist..but hey! It just might be an avenue to your next hit...can't you just hear it?...

Thanks for all the suggestions..some good info that will make it much easier when I peruse the wine isle at the store.:)

They do have wine tasting at the store, usually toward the end of the week but it's usually the high end wine and we're not looking to spend that kind of money for an occasional glass of wine. We usually only have one glass but want to make sure it's something we'll enjoy..unlike that one bottle of white wine we got. *shudder*

I'm with Halo on the red wine preference (though I don't drink it anymore), but if you prefer the white, try the californian Ernest and Julio Gallo range. They are pretty decent.

Also some of the Chilean and South African whites are pretty awesome.

The Australian Koonunga Hill range are great too (oh dear  that will get Insomniac raving again :p )

I hate white wine, even with fish or poultry.

Red's OK, as long as it's not too dry or sweet. (That YellowTail stuff is supposed to be nice, but I've never tried it)

(You both want me, I can tell :) )
