I have a friend who has just built a computer

    amd phenom II x4 955
    gigabyte 880gma -ud2h
    1 stick 4gb ddr3 corsair cmv4gx3m1a1333c9
    corsair 430cx psu
    integrated video card

on a cold boot, he gets 3 long beeps *pause* 3 more long beeps and it continues that pattern until it suddenly boots normally.

when trying to install windows, the whole system would freeze or it wont detect the dvd drive.

Also, when it freezes, purple stuff appears at the corner of the screen (pictures attached)

he ran memtest86+ for 3 hrs, the ram passed

leaving the system on idle in bios, the computer can still freeze
    flashed bios to f5

he has the same problems after the flash as well

I can't think of any reason why the computer is doing this. Also, these problems are not consistent. It will do one thing on one boot, and another on other boots.

Have you tried unplugging the PC, and re-seating all the components?

He has tried re-seating all of the components. He has even switched cables and stuff, but he's still having troubles.

Are the beep codes listed in the Motherboard manual?

The closest match to that beep code that my friend found is something about the video card being incompatible.

We sorta ruled that out, because it's an onboard video card.

EDIT: He's gonna put in a video card from another computer just to make real sure that it's not the onboard.

    Hi,

Check the mounting of the HeatSink/Fan for the Processor. Sounds like it might not be sitting securely onto the Processor. Doesn't happen much today but in the past some heatsinks had a "step" and if the heatsink was installed 180 degrees off very little contact was made with the processor. Symptoms were pretty much the same as yours.

    Maybe?

    Good Luck, Jim

I'm pretty sure it's not that.

With Intel CPU's it would have shut down within 30 seconds if that was the case. I'm not sure if AMD CPU's have changed within the last few years, but if they haven't, then he'd be seeing smoke come out of his computer... haha

I'll tell him to check that again, though. He said he was gonna go disassemble everything and re-seat all of the components again.

His problem seems to be fixed now. He reseated his CPU.

    Thanks to everybody who helped.
