Windows XP Pro comcast cable modem linksys router ,

Hard wired systems not using wyfi ,my main computer got wacked somehow as it was the only computer on at the time thur router another computer works fine which was off at the time.

Problem is since jan 30 2011 i cannot for the life on me get this computer back on line. went through all i kmow how to do and yet windows willnot allow a ip address to get on line. I cannot ping anything and ipconfig willnot show a mac or ip address router is delivering one but windows keeps telling me contact your network person. under repair network willnot conect all other tests pass. proper boxes are checked in devices and comcast as no other advise for4 me. We went thur the deal 4 times together. Plugging cable modem directly into said computer willnot offer any diff. out comes.
Using windows defender but turn off and no other firewall. Did have Noprton but uninstalled it,no changes. Reloaded devices and connections wizARD MANY TIMES no luck. Tried aux network card same deal no luck. Ran malware and regisry software and trojant finder no luck. ip router enabled no wins proxy enabled no net bois over tcpip disabled .
Looked into log and found Failed to load net bios and netBT Tried net bois over tcpip box but that didnot work either. The three devices are in windows/system32/devices afd.sys tcpip.sys net bt.sys I did abunch of other stuff trying to keep a log of what i did. Still pulling the hair out of my head any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Iam a hargware person from dos 3 still have all my junk around 200 baud modem for sale LMAo
how about a big 1 meg harddrive dam aim old. No cherry but this software stuff pulls my hair out. Just no time to read alot. Thanks ahead of time

Was there something going on weather or electrical at the time? It could be that your network card is damaged. It sounds a lot like it was. It used to happen more often, I had a stash of extras for a while.

You could try a new network card or a wireless one. I like a simple USB wireless, installs quickly, less chance of someone doing something wrong when the case stays closed too.

Back in the day when 250 MB hard drives were it i used to take them apart and change the bearings and repair the ribbon on the heads common failure causes, not today hard drives are like old shoes replace em. but still today it pays to pull your covers blow out the dirt from power supply, check the fans and most importantly look at all your capacitors on the mother board, at the tops and see if there expanding from age and just cheap caps. You can replace them before your system IDE goes bad and then your in trouble. There cheap and easy to do if you have some talent. But do watch them and head off problems or just replace your M/B , before your pulling your hair out too.

Forgive all of the questions, I'm trying to get the picture so I don't ask you things that you've already done.

Do you show a network card in the Device manager (the one in control panel, i'm not good with the file)? Does it show the right model? It's not asking for a driver in the device manager?

When you run ipconfig does it show Ethernet Adapter Network Area Connection and then just no MAC or ip under it or does it not even list that line?

I usually want to know why and how and fix the problem rather than a work around. Sometimes it's not worth my sanity. I'd hit a box store, try a usb wireless as a work around, if it doesn't work you can take it back.

Netbios over tcp/ip does need to be enabled but you tried that and other than that, nothing obvious in the config yet because it seems like maybe it's not even reading the card properly.

I so hate reloading the OS that I've done it only twice. Maybe not smart, but i'll work on a fix for weeks rather than reload. I adminster 50+ computers, surely i've needed to reinstall the OS more than that. Just hearing reformat, install the OS makes me shudder. You'll never get that as a suggestion from me.

    Hello again thanks for repleys

Yes network card is in device manager and correct devices drivers, and is enabled and running. I reloaded it several times and reloaded it in save mode also. Iam not sure if ipconfig shows card ,but ill check later today. Remember i also installed another network card and used that and still had same problems. So i went back to oem on board network adapter.

I was looking through my settings and amend my previous statemetn, netbios needs to be enabled if you use static ip's. I generally do so that sticks with me.

    Are you static or DHCP?

The netbios error in the log concerns me. Is there more info on it? I'd like to make sure that isn't the source. I'd like to try to get my XP machine set the way yorus is and see if the netbios would keep me from connecting. If it is netbios we could focus on that.

Here's my ipconfig /all can you tell my what is different in yours? (if you are static, I'll change mine over)

hrlow2 just reminded me in another thread that sometimes it's not the computer, it's the router. I forget that sometimes when other computers are working.

I think some routers have security functions in them that recognize your mac but if other things have changed, they block you thinking you might be spoofed or otherwise compromised. That's my theory, I've never bothered to investigate it. Have you reset your connection all the way from the modem?

i did connect directly to modem bypassing router no luck also my router is giving my computer a ip address.

my ipconfig has no addresses all zeros

ran ipconfig/flushdns no luck there also
i cannot copy my ipconfig and post it like you did just have file how do i send it????????
my ip is DHCP from comcast

also i have error when trying to renew ip address = RPC server is unavailable

I did check router info thats all ok and issuing ip address to my computer but windows willnot allow see your network manager.

what was the netsh qc command supposed to do? Who told you to run that? Google gave me very rough ideas that its used to reset some of the dhcp stuff. netsh winsock reset command only works if its windows xp sp2 or greater. The bigger concern to me is dispearing devices and rpc errors, which indicate a damaged os, I would first recommend your put in your xp cd, and at the run box type, sfc /scannow which stands for system file checker, and start with that. Are programs randomly crashing and stuff or other then the no internet is the system working normaly?

netsh microsoft fix it 50199 to reset tcp\ip

that disappearing act has stop after i ran a malware program and registry checker program

computer and programs are all stable and run normal

ill try the scannow is that like the scandisk program?????
ive only been running winxp pro for ayear now clean install

    Thanks for repleys

  21. Colemanguy

    Colemanguy MajorGeek

No its not like scandisk, scandisk checks for bad sectors on a hard drive, sfc checks for bad or damaged system files, which if you had an infected machine probably is lingering issues. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 this fix doesn't mention the qc thing instead a different fix. netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt is the actual given command in that article by ms. Was there any malware found during your scans? Some of the newer malware is so damaging it can require a reinstall if not removed properly? Also, have you checked your proxy setttings in Internet Explorer to make sure thats not causing issues, even if you dont use ie, some other browsers pull that info and cause problems.

ok i do remember that kind of file checker in one of the older OS,s just cant remember were ????? so this is simular to that thanks i like the old harddrive defrag program that used to be in win 95 untill ms got sued for that one. i have OC now maybe the same old company.
I also ran trojent remover program and no finds. A registared malware program didnot find any programs either. Ran a registared reg. program alot of bad files.

Cant seem to get sfc scannow program to work

If your using xp service pack 2 or later you can reset the winsock useing, netsh winsock reset at the command line. Can also try rerunning that above netsh int ip reset one.

Ya that caught my eye but dont know what that is. What is RPC server?????

Ah i remember now dos ver 6.0 had a nice defrag program dos 6.11 was without it after MS failed to pay they got sued. MS had to make a new release by court order hence 6.11 then whos this came out with dos 7.0 i think thats when win 95 was getting its start.

By reset the router I actually meant reboot. Reboot the modem and then the router.

Did we try setting a static ip on this computer yet? You can run ipconfig on the computer that works. You don't have to change directories, the command will run from whatever one comes up. (you were looking for cd c:\ )

Take the ipconfig from the computer that is working and enter into the other one but change the IP by one number at the end.

There seems to be more going on but that is the most obvious to me. I don't see in your ipconfig that DHCP is enabled.

    Can you check your services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
Make sure that some critical services are started. For now, don't change the settings, just start the service if it isn't started. List any that weren't already started or if they are missing.

    DHCP Client
    DNS Client
    Network Connections
    Remote Access Connection Manager
    Remote Procedure Call
    TCP/IP NetBios Helper
    WebClient
    Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
    Workstation

LOL i reset the router and rebooted it and took it out of the picture many times already and installed the modem directly to the affect computer and still no change. I will check the services and get back to you. I dont know why dhcp wont enable either. whats with the foreign language in my ipconfig????????? Iam at work 7 days aweek good old Salary but its work.

Although i would love to find this problem and beat it ive been work on this since Jan30. Would a windows 7 upgrade be the best bet and a good fix? or is that going to just give me the same problems as now by win7 just copying what i already have or would it fix the unline issues?? i dont know. Atleast this way i wont lose my programing and programs in root of C:\ i dont know just thinking out loud.
Isplit up my drives and keep my clusters set to smallest number and keep my programs stored in other then C: just because of this kind of out come. A lesson learned long ago. I could install windows again in another partition and try that, and due a dual boot and choose what boots?????

    star393 Private E-2

Maybe as a test i should just pull the c: drive out and install another clean H D with a fresh copy of windows and just make sure MB and cards are taken out of the picture. That way the mb buss and paths will be checked and either ok or bad.????? Whats the file name for ipconfig.bat under windows in win xp???? maybe i can look for it in my back up usb drive which is 500 gigs. i started to copy all of c: to usb drive but windows was having a fit allow me to copy files access denied.

The netsh commands with the switches could have easily stopped a service to make a change and didn't turn it back on. I would look there, if DHCP service got turned off like that we'll be running around in circles with all of the other tests and fixes.

I never touched the netsh commands other then yesterday to clear the log other then that.

looked into service and found both dhcp client and tcpip net bios helper stopped and not running. tryed to restart services and came up with erro code of 1068 for both they willnot start.

All other programs you outlined to me are running and there.

next step i guess look up error code 1068

I think this is a Bingo

you can't run ipconfig from the "run" line. It's Start > Run type in CMD (press ok) and in the command box enter ipconfig /all.

so it seems that dhcp client and tcpip net bios helper wont run because netbios over tcpip isnt working. I think if i can get that done it may work.

erro 1068 is whats stopping all this and thats seems to point to netbios over tcpip not working or either corrupption of this device RPC willnot load as its depended on netbios over tcpip it seems.

    oh , I'm feeling froggy, I'll jump.

The error says that your dependecies aren't started. Helpful, right?

I have two links for you. One is recent and similar, read his solution HERE
After the poster's solutions there is another that was posted that I find easier to read HERE

Interesting, the first poster said he experienced this after a recent update. Tuesday was update day for MS. I also found another person who had this after the malware Tea Timer.

As far as MS updates go, my rule is to not install an MS update until at least Friday of update week, prefer to wait until mondays. I had an update that could not be uninstalled back on Win98. Took out 90% of my users, cured me for life. Usually by Monday, microsoft has found and pulled the bad update.

    Yeah, that, not much lately!

Do try those links when you aren't working. I think they are going to work for you. The second one has a registry edit so save a copy before you try it please. Again, been there, done that, it wasn't pretty. i have to learn everything the hard way it seems!

Them programs are another can of worms, so far everyone of them tell you theres always something wrong like going to the Dentist you always have cavities. I even noticed after its all clean up and you option out from buying the program they dump 200 more back into your registary upon uninstalling it PROVEN. So i bought one right off the bat been doing the maint. to windows all along no cherry here. defrag and reg. edit and temp and cookies all that stuff can get you into trouble. Them were the first things i did. Virus and malware and defrag and registry. Most of them programs will only allow a few fixs or just a scan before you buy it. One program will find some things while another will find something else. When you got 12 year olds on the computer you have to on your guard.

Right now its how do i get netbios over tchpip back into NON plug and play devices as i uninstalled it to get rid of corrup driver, it had ? mark in it. RCP and others depend on that one before any will start up. I got that far.

What programs are you referring to? Something in one of the ads?

The links have walk throughs for the fix to netbios. The first one doesn't have any ads or programs so i'm not sure what you are referring to. Both fixes are in that post, not sure if it's easy to follow the second one the way it was posted there so if it doesn't seem to make sense, the second link for the second fix might be easier to follow.

If there is a program that can do those fixes for the netbios, I'm not familiar with it, i don't let programs "fix" the registry, i only let ccleaner clear bad entries. I've also had issues with other registry cleaners long ago. Ccleaner will clean but not add in fixes for this.
