Missing Windows XP Component Files/Program Files

I seem to be missing the Paint program from my Start>All Programs > Accessories.

I tried going to Start>Control panel>Add/remove programs and I attempted to re-add the missing components from Add/Remove components by clicking on the missing file items etc. and running the tool.

For some reason the tool cannot find:

    market.mar
    msnms.ico
    signup.mar
    auupdate.exe

These files are needed for the tool to completely run and add all those components. Since it cannot find these files the program stops and these components are not added.

These files should be in C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

I tried searching my system with the "Search results" finder but it could not find the above programs anyplace on my system nor on the Windows XP disk that I have.

I ran the System File Checker sfc /scannow and it did not rectify things.

I did find the mspaint in the C:\Windows\system32 folder so I tried just pasting it into my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

I do not think that this is the proper way of correcting this and doing it this way I may not be adding all files.

The main issue remains why is Add/remove components not running correctly?

If anyone has any idea what might have happened and how to correct this please let me know.

Thank you for your help. I went to the site and tried applying the components individually for the Accessories and other components too.

I do not know why those other files were missing or what they were needed for.

After running scannow (Windows File Checker) I am concerned that my i386 folder (and possibly other system folders/files) may not be as it should be. I am posting an attachment jpg captured from my "search results" of where i386 folders exist.

I checked out the "LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker)" tutorial article at www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html. I may be missing some system files etc since I continually need to insert my XP disk.

Please evaluate and let me know how I can check for this.

    Thank you.

What operating system are you using?
    XP, Win2000, ME or what?
    System specs might be helpful.

I have MS Paint installed on my XP Pro but no mention of:-

    market.mar
    msnms.ico
    signup.mar
    auupdate.exe

What indicated that you needed these files?

Please reply through here, rather than PM, as you will get much wider spread of helpers. Bazza

I am using the Windows XP Pro with SP1 and 2 installed. I use Cable internet service.

I have gone to Add/Remove Components and tried adding components part by part to get all those extra Windows parts on my machine in case any others were needed.

I was successfully able to get the Accessories>Paint (and other programs from there re-installed)

I was unable to add/re-add subcomponents to MSN Explorer (needed auupdate), to Message Queing, and Management & Modificatiion tools. I probably do not need these components from here anyhow.

I think that this is resolved although I do not know what those needed programs are listed above. i do not know if this is a malware request.

My main question at this point would be what subcomponents do I really need to have on my machine.

Thanks for any help and guidance.
