    Urgent!

I'm not sure if you give will be allowed to help me with this, because of site rules.

My friend forgot her password to her Windows phone. It's a Nokia Lumia with Windows Mobile 8.1.

Can you help me help her?

I told her that the only thing I may be able to do for her right now is probably a factory reset. Is this true? and how do I go about this on a windows phone?
I'm currently googling my options. I'm familiar with Androld and with Windows on PC.

    Thanks.

You can always take it to the retail carrier and have them remove or reset the password. That is as long as it's your phone. You lose no data or settings that way.

They cannot do that with Android. They can do that with Windows Phone? because that is rather disturbing if they can.

I figure it's similar to an ISP account. My parents have Cox and I have had to call and verify I have account credentials then they issue a temporary password. They cant see the password but they can reset it. It seems a phone carrier could do the same thing.

No, that is different. The carrier provides you cellular service, but that is via a SIM card. If a sim card is locked, yes they can assign you a new one and you go on your merry way. If a phone is locked, that is a personal password and account. The carrier has no access to it, nor should they. It is no different than a local password on your computer.

I respectfully disagree :). I know AT&T can unlock sim cards that are password protected. You just have to prove its your phone/sim card with a photo ID. I had a friend who accidentally locked hers twice and they unlocked it both times.

You disagree because you are not understanding the issue in this thread. It is easy to get mixed up with the different types of locks out there (bootloader, carrier, sim), but BluJay specifically said "password".

Sim lock has nothing to do with a password on your phone.

Carrier lock has nothing to do with a password on your phone.

Sim and carrier locks can be dealt with by the carrier. A password on the phone is local, and no, there is nothing they can do.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock

Sim lock deals with phone connecting to a network. Password deals with people using the phone.

    Lock != password.

You cannot remove a sim lock by reseting the phone either. In that reseting the phone fixed the OP's issue, we know it was not a sim lock.

Must be a Nokia/Windows Phone thing. On my Galaxy S4 (Android) I can recover a lost password or pattern through Google. Forgot Passcode > enter Google credentials > reset password.

Thats only if it is a pattern:

For password, you need Samsung's specific service (which is a 3rd party feature). It is not on other phones.

Either way, neither of these are accessible to the carrier.

I'm not trying to be a hard ***, I am just trying to clarify the issue.

Gotcha and no offence taken. I've kind of jumped all over the spectrum with my suggestions and you have stayed on point.

Off topic. I know that there is a way to acesss, remove or bypass any password or passcode if there is a search warrant or some sort of court order. It's just not something the general public can do.

That can't be right, if there was such a way, trust me the hackers would have found it and made it mainstream. The hacking society is much much more advanced and capable that the law makers. Take Anonymous for example.

And to clarify, yes it was indeed a local phone lock not a sim lock, and all that Adrynalyne has said was correct.

Consider this; some tablets and laptops can accept a sim card for 3G/4G access, some may use a usb dongle; if you lock your sim or forget your login credentials, you can still use the device (tablet or laptop), but you cannot access internet via your data plan. If you forgot your device login, but your sim is good, you still cannot access anything, since you cannot log into the device. However, the sim can still be used in another device with its own login credentials.

Similarly, smart phones, are miniature computers, and the same logic applies.
You can use a smart phone without a sim card, but you will not be able to make or receive calls or use 3G/4G, but you can use wifi and everything else on the phone.

Its very specialized software that is kept under wraps. Nobody has ever seen it, but we have all heard of it.
