Default Computer won't hibernate after installing Skype

Hi,

I installed Skype a few days ago and now my computer won't hibernate. It's an HP laptop w/ Windows 7. Whereas before it would go into hibernate after about 15 minutes or so, now it just stays running even after a long time has passed. The only other thing I've done recently was install an Adobe Reader update, so I don't know for sure which one caused it, but I'm thinking it was Skype. Any suggestions?

Also, is there anything 'funny' about Skype 5.0? I generally don't like programs such as media players connecting to internet, etc.; is there anything about Skype that should be turned off in order to minimize resource uses?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

The obvious thing to do is check your hibernation settings first, control panel, power options if sleep is set to never then there's your problem, make sure sleep is set to a minute then turn you mouse upside down see if it goes into sleep mode.

If no joy hit advanced power options, 'hit change plan settings, change advanced power settings' make a note of the power plan selected then set it to power saver, this will allow your computer to go into sleep regardless of pretty much anything,if this doesn't work you can then work through the list of devices that can halt sleep mode and restrict it even further, power saver should stop the camera from halting sleep if it is skype that's causing it though.

If you would like to rule out either piece of software you could do it a couple of ways, start task manager and check if there's a skype process running, you can end the process here or enter skype settings and stop it from starting when windows loads which will require a restart, just do the same with adobe to rule them out.

I don't use Skype so I don't know if there are any probs with the new version, the best thing would be to check the skype forum for any update probs.

Thanks for the reply, how do I go through a specific list of devices; I don't see that option?

I tried going from HP recommended options to power saver mode and set the options for 1 minute each and when I did that the screen didn't even turn off. In HP recommended options (what it was originally set to) when I set sleep and screen off to 1 minute each, the screen turned off but it didn't go to sleep.

When I installed Skype I selected for it to not start at startup so it shouldn't even be on in the first place but like I say the only things I've done recently are install Skype and do an Adobe Reader update and I don't see why Adobe would have messed with it, maybe it did though. I think there was also a Windows critical update within the past few days as well, could that do anything?

Edit- I just tried doing a system restore and it wouldn't let me, it says there was an error and maybe an antivirus program was running so I turned off avast and tried again, still wouldn't let me so I turned off Zone Alarm and it still wouldn't let me now I'm not sure what to do.

The only other AV-type programs I have on my computer are superantispyware, spybot S&D and spyware blaster, but those don't even do real time scanning do they, so would they stop System Restore?

Thanks for the help.

Sorry, just bumping.

Is there anything to do other than to system restore in safe mode? Is there some way to tell what's not letting it do system restore?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

In power options click 'change plan settings' then click 'change advance power settings' for reference, you can't adjust every device but there are further controls.

Hmmm,go into control panel,admin tools,event viewer.

Expand the 'Error' category,in there should be error logs of both your failed system restore and maybe your failed sleep mode, post the error codes and the description for these errors.

For system restore it just says 'Unspecified Error'- 0x80070005, and it might have something to do with antivirus, but as far as I know I've only got Zone Alarm and Avast running, with Superantispyware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster also installed, but none of those run in realtime do they? I guess I'll try and disable them through msconfig and see if that helps.

The thing is I updated Adobe Reader, installed Skype and there was also some critical Windows update that all happened within a day or so of the other so I don't know which could have been the one to stop it from sleeping since I only noticed it like the day after all the above happened, but it really seems like it would have been one of those things.

I've looked through the advanced power settings but I just don't see anything that looks weird.

Thanks a lot for the help, too.

Apparently a safe mode restore is the recommended option,it could be one of the other programs but I couldn't say I only use AVG so I couldn't say what current revisions of the security software you use, use.

If you pose the question in the malware forum they may have had experience with it,apparently some anti virus's have an anti tamper component that can halt system restore's in windows 7.

Not that I am aware of Rikky.

Adobe Reader installs an AutoUpdate utility that may cause some activity or conflict that might interfere with hibernation - not sure.

AdobeARM.exe

You can use Startup Control Panel Standalone Version to manage startup programs.

Sun Java also likes to set an autoupdate feature.
Again, don't know if that could cause hibernation to fail.
You can access that setting through Control Panel -> Java -> Update tab -> "Check for updates automatically"
Of course if you turn that Off then you need to watch for updates.

I have found that it is difficult to track down what prevents Auto Standby or Hibernation.

Rikky mentioned this to me:
"Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored..." when I run Windows System Restore with a Norton 2010 product installed --> http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_...819EN&ln=en_US

The question is do you have Norton 2010?
