I got from a friend an old computer that is windows 95. I know most people might think it is junk, but I just want to have it for my kids to play on. Anyways, it's windows 95 and you can't use windows update anymore for windows 95. I want to wipe the hard drive clean and install windows 98 cause a friend lent me the cd. Most people might say,"get winxp!!" but I dont want to spend any money if you get my drift. So, my question is, how do you wipe the hard drive clean and install windows 98, doing it safely. Please help!!

For this you will need the win 98 cd.
    Do you have it?

For this you will need the win 98 cd.
    Do you have it?
Set bios to boot from cd.
Choose boot with cd rom support.
In dos prompt type fdisk command.
Type y for large disk support.
First make primary dos partition.(All partitions must be fat32)
If you want many partitions allocate the size of primary partition and allocate the rest to the extended partition,
Then set logical partition in the first menu, allocate memory for each partition
no need to add disk lables
again from first menu set active partiton to c:
    exit fdisk.
then in the dos promt typy format c:
    repeat for other partitons.
Now you are ready to install.

If you have more than one partition you need to set c as active partition.

Also you might have to delete existing partitions using the fdisk menu before you create new ones.

    Did you create primary partition?
How much memory did you alocate for primary partition.
Which drive did you type the format command?

I recommend NTFS, but I know that's not available in 98. I am an NT type of person.

What is the size of your harddisk?
How many partitions do you want?
For just one partition you can type Y for allocating maximum available size.
If you want 2 partition allocate 50%.

You can chat with mj in msn.He will teach you about toilet papers.

4134 MB pretty small i tried doing the maximum and it used all the space. Do i have to have logical and extended partitions?

    Not needed.
Now try the format c: in the dos prompt.

    Did you restart after fdisk?
Check your partitions in the display partition option inside the fdisk menu.
    It should be
    partition c: 1
    status A
    Type primary dos
    System unknown
    Is it the same?

Ask your friend who gave it to you.
