    ....she's finally finished (almost!) When I bought her, she was a mess, but she'd still run, barely!! The body was fairly good and the interior was almost perfect so I decided to attempt my first automotive restoration, and here are the results;

Sweet, sold my 300ZX TT last year, needed something faster and it just arrived last week. I am hesitant to show it here, people might get the wrong idea, but its actually a MONSTER car payment even after a decent down payment.

Let me guess Major Attitude...Viper R\T-10? Or maybe that new Extreme Hi-Pro Corvette? Or, and I'm going out on a limb here, the new Lamborgihini Diablo!!!:) See, those things are SO expense, I can't even spell it!! As for 'getting the wrong idea,' well if you earned it, and I know you did, then you have the unbounded duty to your 'flock' to show the fruits of your labor! (pretty corny, huh?) Actually, you have 2 choices, don't show us and run the risk of being harassed until hell freezes over until you do! Or two...please refer to #1!!

Now this may not be within the forum rules but DAMN!!! Now that is one fine piece of road worthy hardware!! She IS beautiful Major Attitude. I love that original body style, as compared to the newer ones. However, I do have one advantage over you....no car payment!!! LOL!!!

Yeah, think your kid will like that? Its like a mortgage payment though. I always liked that body style as well, wanted one since they came out in what, 95, I think.

I always liked the Z cars as well, one of my first cars was a 78 280ZX 2+2. Neighbor has a anniversary model that looks like yours Stubby that he is remodeling, I almost bought one that needed restoring last year, but figured the wife would kill me me if I had two ;)

MA, you said your wife would have 'killed' you had you brought home another Z car. Well, in that case, I can only imagine what she did to you when you came home with a Viper!! Have the brusies healed yet?? As for my wife, she wants me to sell 'Lil Red' because, in her words, I need to be in something more sensible because a 300ZX is not a family car!! Granted, it's not, but that's why we have a Chrysler Pacifica and a Dodge Grand Caravan!! Jokingly, I told her that she'll go before my 300 does and, yes.....the brusies are healing nicely!!!:)

Dude, you got family trucksters, you can keep it. Tell her I said it was ok. The way this came about was weird. You might have seen my Ram Daytona I had... Well, it wasnt fast enough for me, so I thought I would get rid of it and get the SRT\10 Ram with the viper motor. A buddy of mine I told this to said, why not just get the Viper, it will handle much better and be a lot faster since it is quite lighter. Well, it was like a lightbulb went off, he was right... Only catch was this meant a car payment. Well, wife didnt say too much, she is used to me. I blame mid life crisis on it all, though having used that excuse for 5 years now, it may be getting thin ;)

MA, now that you have the Viper, does this mean I can have your Harley?

Think of the extra space you would have in your garage.

I'll give one thing N5638J, you sure do set your sights high!! An original Shelby Cobra, with the 429 in it, will set you back very nicely!! That is, if you could find one!! I saw one in Classic Car Magazine in cherry condition and less than 500 miles and the guy was asking $190,000 for it!! BTW, what bank did you say you were going to rob?? LOL!!!

Ahh, Eleanor!! Who could forget that beauty? When she jumped that bridge and landed, I almost cried!!:) How could Hollywood take such a fine machine and totally destroy it? However, I found out later, that she was NOT an original, but rather another Hollywood 'fake!!' I slept good that night!!:)

Well MA, I followed you suggestion and told her that YOU said I could keep Lil Red and I was firm about it too. However, don't worry, I won't sue....these newer set of brusies, cuts and scrapes will heal in about 2 or 3 weeks with no scarring!!! LOL!! Remind me, in the future, to never follow your advice again!!!!:) It's too painful!! Of course, I'm only joking around, but my wife was under the impression that once she was restored, I was going to sell her. I 'may' have given her that impression, but once I saw how she turned out, I think my wife now knows she's fighting a losing battle. Oh well, all's fair in love and war, right???

Women... You never restore a car just to sell it. The Viper is a fine example. My wife thinks i wont keep it long, my friends are betting over\under July 4th. What they dont get is its a dream, to me I can just sit in the driveway in a chair and just look at it because it is a classic gorgeous American design that looks as good sitting still as it does moving. In its own way, it is to me as sexy as a beautiful woman. Many car buffs would agree.

    Nice motors guys :)

Have to agree with you MA, on cars and just sitting their looking at them, some like the Viper are plain and simple automotive works of art, but at least with this artwork you can get to drive it, no music playing just the musical note of the engine will do to bring big smile :)

Totally! he'd be in his glory to sit in the sit with is mits on the wheel :) He had an absolute blast at the car show so I can guess with great accuracy that he'd enjoy it just as much.

Myself.. well, I just bought an '05 Mitsubishi Outlander (graphite gray).. I'm still in the family truckster mode (obviously) but this thing goes through snow like it's barely there. Handles extremely well and has some nice low end tq too (for what it's worth). I'm only paying like 50 bucks more per month than my subaru.. Infact, I am taking a picture of my new ride and sending it to Subaru with a note... "I loved your service and your cars so much, I bought another car.. " (*picture of me and my mitsubishi enclosed*)..lol :)

Im considering a similar idea, I need a cheaper car to drive, this 14 mpg is sucking. I just need a daily driver, but a pickup is more my thing. I was considering Nissan until I saw it got 16 mpg, a small quad cab truck, thats insane!

Who makes Viper, Dodge? (We don't have them here)

Only problem with having a nice car is that you can't park and leave them anywhere, especially in a car park.

If it's not stolen, it will be scratched.

You need an "everyday" car as well.

Listening to you talk MA, I'm going to have to disagree with your wife. You've found your dream and I have the feeling that that beauty will be with you until Hell freezes over! (both the car AND the wife!!)

Halo, I never realized that you were so poetic. You just may not how close to the truth you really are when you said about the sound of the engine. Okay, so my 300 purrrs and MA's is more like a roar, but it's still sweet music regadless of the car.:)

Personally, it doesn't matter WHAT you drive just as long as you ENJOY doing it. Whether your plowing through snow banks in an Outlander, or navigating a twisty, country road in a sports car, the feeling you get when you're behind the wheel is what really matters.

Yeah, Dodge does make the Viper. However, the newer Vipers are, IMHO, losing the classic look. They're still beautiful, and fast, but they just don't have the classic Viper look...like MAs. When you see one like MA's on the road you KNOW it's a Viper, but the newer ones look like a cross between the Jaguar XJ-12 and a Corvette.

I have two vehicles, My 1994 sonoma that gets about 25 MPG, and my Good Truck 2001 Jimmy that gets about 18 MPG.

Drive the Jimmy mostly on weekends and vacations, only put about 5000 miles a year on the jimmy, hope it lasts a long time.
There is a down side to not driving a vehicle very much though, recently had new brakes put on the Jimmy because everything was all rusted up from not using it enough!!!!!

How is that Xterra, my understanding is people who own the Nissan trucks simply love them. I looked at the Titan and dont see the fascination, the interior was horrible.

That's the first time I've seen a Viper, and I have to say I like it.

It looks like a very souped up Mazda RX8.

A lot bigger though. The original design concept was a throw back to the old Ford Cobra. That was 2 seats and a huge 426 engine and it is still sought after and reproduced today. You sat in it, barely could move and went really, really stupidly fast.

Same concept, tough to get in and out of, claustorphobic, handles nicely, stiff as a tank. 500 hp, 550 lbs of torque.

    Nice ride, MA.

That's so much cooler than a Vette. Around here, Vettes are everywhere. I really hate them.

I guy I know has an NSX and used to own an RT-10. In his opinion the NSX handled much better at high speeds, but in the 1/4 the Viper would blow it away.

Stubby, nice Z. My cousin had one of those and lent it to me for a day. Pretty freakin fast:eek:

@Evilevets, yes, that was my problem as well, the Vette, while a sweet ride, is as common as a minivan. That said, Chevy finally beat the Viper this year with the Z06 Corvette. Not by much and it only took them 14 years ;) Price tag around 70,000.

@Sibeer I had some friends in the back who like to smoke other stuff, that left a smell. Yuch :)

@Sasquatch, yes the Nissan cars were called the Japenese Corvette. Many of those cars still get a lot of respect even from American car lovers as the Twin Turbo models were very fast for their time. I believe the original Z designer is in his 80's and still attends the occasional Z show. They have a HUGE following in the US and abroad.

@Insomniac, you asked for it, read away :) It is an 8 liter v-10 with a 6 speed. With a twin turbo system it can easily do 1,000 horsepower. Of course, I am told that its so fast, I need to learn to drive it before considering upgrades. I was told that if I wasnt careful, hitting the gas could cause you to be facing the other way.
    Heres some detailed specs:
    http://www.internetautoguide.com/car-specifications/09-int/2001/dodge/viper/index.html

This pretty much makes the point that the car has 2 purposes; go fast and handle it well, everything else was sacrificed. This was something I had to seriously consider as I had access to a used ZR1 Corvette for less money (Built to compete with Ferrari years back, wider and badder then any Corvette till now):
    http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/New/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/24661/Act/Roadtest/

    Heres the ZR1 info:
    http://www.mathewscollection.com/corvette/Corvette_91_ZR1.htm

Speaking of which, take a look at this guys collection, you will see a Cobra, thats the inspiration for the Viper:
    http://www.mathewscollection.com/collection.htm

I like this test drive, he sums it up well, sweet ride, but all that power can be hard to handle:

Bloody hell, the engine specs are pretty impressive!

It's a somewhat heavy car, but it's got the balls to push it along. Bring it over my place, I've got a few tree stumps I want pulled out.

I hope you realise the tyres will cost an absolute fortune if you ever have to change them.

Please don't tell me it has one of those crappy space saver spare tyres?

Must be a firm ride with such low profile rubber, but the handling and steering response would be awesome!

    And yes I'm jealous. :)

  41. Major Attitude

Major Attitude Co-Owner MajorGeeks.Com Staff Member

I think it does have a mini spare, theres very little trunk room, no glovebox, not much room for anything. It didnt have air conditioning the first few years.

I guess putting 19" tires on there is a bad plan? ;) I was thinking a taller profile would slow down spin.....

Wish you were near here, would have you buy anytime just because your Aussie. I dont know an American who doesent want to visit Australia.

Its snowing here, so the downside is the car is here and I cant drive it for probably 2 months... Ugh.

I thought it had a space saver spare, as the boot looks pretty small.

You can put a taller profile, and still have the same rolling diameter.

It's not difficult to work out. Here's everything you didn't want to know about tyres. :p

For example, the front are 275/35ZR18.

275 is the width in millimetres.

35 is the aspect ratio, so the sidewall is 35% of the width, which in this case is 96.25 millimetres.

18 is the rim diameter in inches (450mm). (R stands for radial, and Z is a speed rating)

    So the height of this tyre is 450 + 96.25 +96.25 (2 sidewalls) = 642.5 mm.

You can use this to work out the rolling diameter for any tyre.

That car would be awesome here. It would certainly turn some heads.

I know a great road through a national park I'd love to drive it through.
