I'm trying to block the msn server from anyone logging on to msn messenger passport server but I don't know how to do that with the host files and for some reason my host file won't block msn.com

Add this line to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 nnnnnn.nnn

where nnnnnn.nnn is the domain you want blocked. You probably already know your hosts file is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and is read only, so you will have to open its Properties and unset the Read Only attribute before you can edit it, making sure to reset it when you're finished..

the only problem now is that i don't know the host name of msn servers only the ips. do you know the host names?

One quick thing that comes to mind is do a netstat in a cmd prompt when MSN is connected. Then a domain lookup; use that info in your host. I'm sure there is an easier way but that will work.

good luck

Im assuming your using 2000 or XP.
go to start, run, and type CMD...
in the black box (CMD window) type *netstat* without the *
That shows you all active network connections by port, IP, Protocol and the state its in. ie.. established, timed out ect...

you could also do a netstat /? and that will give you an explanation and some additional switches to include in the command. You can google netstat or go to MS online documentation and read more on it than you could possible ever want to.

Again, while logged into MSN or any other service, do a netstat and you will get the server name or at a minimum the IP.
Good luck
