Vista shutdowns of its own accord.

Hi guys,
Can anyone suggest how to stop vista randomly shutting down? I'm pretty sure its a virus issue but can't get onto the laptop for long enough to run the antivirus and malware that you suggest in the sticky posts above!

I can sometimes get into safe mode with command line and I managed to type Shutdown -a but I just got the answer that no shutdown was in process and then the laptop shutdown.

Can you guys suggest anything? I'm hoping that its software and not a hardware issue as software can be fixed for free!!

Its Vista Home Premium before I forget.

Sometimes I can get into Safe Mode but it still kicks me out faster than I can install anything. It's someone elses laptop and has no antivirus or protection at all!

Its starting to look like an overheating issue, but it doesn't seem to get too hot and the fans are running. Although now it won't power up unless on mains power... got to be hardware related I'm thinking.

Ah well!
