Last night I downloaded from this site "PC Tools AntiVirus". It looked simple and easy to use. I installed it and then ran a full scan and went to bed. This morning I checked it and it had found "Trojan.PWS.lcqSmiley.A" and "virus:Worm.SdBot.TMD". I have quarantined these. However, my problem is I'm going thru and following the Malware Removal procedures and I'm stuck on "Empty ALL Quarantine type folders for Anit-virus and spyware applications". I do not know how to empty the folder in this program. If you could tell me what I need to do, I'd greatly appreciate it. And then I can continue with the rest of the steps and send in my logs to be checked. Thank you again.
P.S. I'm not too computer savvy here, please send simple instructions. Thanks

I also downloaded Avast. Do you see anything else my computer needs to stay protected?

Did I attach the correct logs to be checked? Also, due to having kids that use this computer, can I "hide" the folders now that the cleaning is done?

    Re: malware check please

You should read the stickies. Most notably this one: Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!

These last two posts that were not necessary cost you more than a day of additional wait time. In fact I would not have even been posting this until late tonight or tomorrow. The only reason I did is because you had another OLDER thread that I merged with this new thread.

Since you have installed things after attaching your logs, please do the below.

First make sure that only one antivirus is installed. I saw Norton 360 in your log.

    Then do the below.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jen1\Local Settings\Temp

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created.

    Re: malware check please

I'm sorry about the extra postings. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or rude. I just have a bad habit of if I have a question and don't ask it right away, I have a tendency to forget about it.

I'm sure once you tell me it will come back to me, but could you lead me where to go to delete the "windows\temp" and "documents and settings" files?

As for the Norton 360, I had deleted it thru Add/Delete Programs list. Since then, I had also installed and uninstalled Mcafee. The comcast guy suggested I use Mcafee, however, the computer tech I usually take my pc to swears by Avast, so I installed that. I apologize again for the extra postings.

The "Attach Files" section down below says, "Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg log pdf png psd txt zip", but the "Manage Attachments" button is not showing up to attach my new log for you. I have tried several times to do this.

Alright, for some reason, now I can attach my log ...here it is..

Also, since my kids use my pc, can I close the hidden files that were opened in the cleaning process?

Actually this is not recommended normally because it provides easy hiding places for malware. You have a bigger issue though. I see we are cleaning the Jen1 user account which has administrator priviledges. If you are allowing your kids to use this account that is a much bigger problem than worrying about hidden files. First each person in your family should have their own account and then you can adjust settings accordingly for each user, and only people who are really going to be the administrator should have administator priviledges. If you don't trust your kids to be able to have hidden files enabled, why would you give them full permission to do anything they want by making them administrators?

We have some cleanup to do. Some of it is due to Norton and McAfee still leaving somethings behind.
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Lic NetConnect service
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteCLTNetCnService into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1E8A6170-7264-4D0F-BEAE-D42A53123C75} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\bin\jusched.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now reboot your PC and after reboot, delete the below folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jen1\Application Data\Symantec
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
    C:\705e21e27e9a91b0e1

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Okay, did what you asked.

As far as the kids are concerned, I will set up an account for them also.

Do you see anything else that you see needs to be deleted? My computer is sunning faster, however, I am noticing that sometimes if I go to change the time or date, it will freeze, or if I go to use the calculator it freezes for a second. I also notice that if the avast icon in the tray is spinning, sometimes whatever I'm doing will freeze. Is this normal? I understand this is an older computer, and there are some issues I will have to deal with.

Thank you for your help and again I apologize for the extra postings.

    No! Your logs are clean.

What is your microprocessor type and speed and how much RAM do you have installed.
    • Do these issues occur if no browsers are open?
    • Do they still occur if you shut down COMODO Firewall?
    • Do they still occur if you shut down IObit SmartDefrag?
    • Do they still occur if you shut down avast! Antivirus?
    • Do they still occur if you shut down Windows Defender?
    • Do this issues also occur in safe boot mode?
Your uninstall list shows Yahoo! Anti-Spy but I don't see it running anywhere. Did you have this and then uninstall it?

What is your microprocessor type and speed and how much RAM do you have installed? I'm not sure. I just got this computer (used) from a family friend about 2-3 months ago or so. musksnipe had me run something last week to tell him what was in my computer, I think it was Everest? or something like that. Would that be able to tell you? I would be more than happy to run it for you and attach the logs. He did say it was an older computer.

Yahoo anti-spy... the comcast guy says he runs it on his computer and suggested I do also. I'm seeing it my add/delete program list. Do you think it's worth having/using?

As far as your list of does the stuff happen if I shut them down, yes. In fact, I've only had them since I joined here. Here is a list of what I have downloaded:Spybot, Avast, AVG spyware, Ccleaner, COMODO firewall, IObit SmartDefrag, Combofix, ATF Cleaner, and I also downloaded Windows Defender (think I got that from the Microsoft site) I know this is asking a lot, however, could you suggest to me how often I should run each program to keep my computer going good? Do I need all of these programs?

I'm also dealing with a issue with microsoft and the updates right now too. I keep getting the update icon in the tray, however, I had problems downloading it, and then got it downloaded and it still wants me to download it some more. I got online support for that, but I've waited for a week to hear from the guy and he hasn't emailed me back yet.:(

I have noticed a difference in how the computer runs. It is a little faster now. Thank you.

I found your post with your log. It said this:
    Code:
        Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium II, 400 MHz (4 x 100)
Motherboard Name Intel Seattle SE440BX (2 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM)
          Motherboard Chipset Intel 82440BX
          System Memory 384 MB (SDRAM)
The truth is that this PC is too slow and has too little RAM to properly run Windows XP. I don't care what Microsoft states the minimum requirements are. You will have problems with this PC especially after adding all the software you need just to protect yourself since they will require significant resources.

It is not necessarily the greatest but it is okay. However if you are going to have this installed and running (is it running full time to provide protection??? ) then you should uninstall Windows Defender. Note however that based on your logs, I do not see Yahoo Antispyware actually running and giving you any protection, so perhaps it would just be best to uninstall it an keep Windows Defender or use something better as listed in the below How to protect yourself link.

You can uninstall AVG Antispyware and IObit SmartDefrag to help with your performance issues some more. And as I said above if, whatever you have from Yahoo provides active realtime protection, then uninstall Windows Defender. Scans should be run weekly and check daily for updates. If you get an update, then run a new scan at that time. The other programs like Spybot, CCleaner, & ATF Cleaner only run when you run them so they are not issues and are good to have around. Obviously you need to keep Avast & Comodo since you need both an antivirus & firewall program. You could try living with just the Windows XP firewall and uninstalling Comodo Firewall but this does lower your security level since the Windows XP firewall is really not adequate.

You can attempt to work issues like this in the Software Forum but the first question to answer is do you have a valid license for Microsoft Windows XP and does Microsoft Update confirm it to be valid?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
