When I try to watch streaming videos through Windows Media Player on a browser, the browser crashes for some odd reason. Is there a way to fix this?

Which version of WMP and Windows are you using? What specific type of streaming media are you viewing? It may be that you need to update WMP or its codecs.

I'm using Windows Media Player 10 along with Windows XP with the SP2 patch. What do you mean by type of streaming media?

How can you tell what it is?

    Try the following

    1. Tools -> Options for WMP. Check Connect to Internet (overrides other settings) on the Player Tab

    2. Tools -> Options for WMP. Configure proxy for HTTP for to none.

    Hope this helps.

Well, I tried checking Connect to Internet and configuring the proxy for HTTP to none. First, it started working. Then I tried closing the window the stream was going through and my browser crashed.

Try Disabling the Third Party Browser Extensions.
(Internet Properties >> Advanced Tab >> Uncheck Enable Third Party Browser Extensions >> Click Apply >> Click OK >> Restart the system)

Right-click on the in stream window and select properties from the drop-down menu. In the properties dialog that pops-up it should give an indicationof the file. Alternatively, you could look at the source code of the web site.

    Some possibilities are:

    a) Your graphics drivers need updating.
    b) Your graphics drivers are up-to-date but cannot render the movie. Try lowering the graphics acceleration. In the Windows Media Player select Tools/Options... and lower the acceleration a notch at a time. An alternative way of doing this (but affects all your graphics applications) is to right-click on your desktop and select properties from the pop-up menu. Select the settings tab and then press the Advanced... button. In the next dialog select the Performance tab then lower the graphics acceleration a notch at a time and see if see helps.
    c) You are viewing a movie for which you don't have the codecs to interpret the content. Which is where the file type comes in. You may DivX is something else.
    d) Your Windows Media player needs updating. In Windows Media Plater select Help/Check For Player Updates...

Have you tried an alternative browser? , e.g., FireFox or Maxthon?

I have fairly recent drivers, but there are too many nVidia drivers to choose from. I have tried various graphics drivers in the past and I seem to still have the problem. I can't seem to be able to find the file type due to the browser crashing so soon. When I checked if I had the latest version of WMP, it said I had the latest.Yeah, I've tried different browsers: IE, FireFox, and Opera.

With regard to graphics drivers, download EVEREST Home Edition from here and follow the links in the tool to the nVidia drivers. Can you post the driver version and your graphics card details? I think this may be a likely suspect.

You've tried all these browsers and each crashes? Were there any error messages? Have you tried b) lowering the graphics acceleration?

Have you looked at the Windows Event log viewer to see if there are any error or warning message logged relating to the problem? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427

Do these demos at Microsoft give you the same problem: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/demos/fast_streaming_demos.aspx That site gives a lot of resources and help.

An alternative route would be to re-installation of either a) Windows Media Player or b) the plug-in for Windows Media Player. I doubt that browser repair or re-installation would help as the problem appears to be browser independent.

I have an MSI GeForce FX 5900XT with 71.22 drivers.

Yep, I've tried all those browsers and all of them crashes. An example of an IE crash message may be "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

"Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0xe8505100."

That's the description of the error in Event Viewer. I'm not sure what it means.

I tried those demos and they still crash my browsers.

Latest nVidia drivers are 71.89: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3294

Unfortunately that error message conveys nothing, was expecting some indication of where the failure has occurred and/or an error code. If all four demos (which by the way are different media types) fail from the Microsoft site and you have tried lower graphics acceleration then the implication appears to go towards the media player or its communication with a browser.

One thing to try is right clicking the link for one of the Microsoft movies and save this to disk. Once the download is complete, is Windows Media player capable of playing this downloaded movie? This would elminate the media player and the graphics drivers.

I would suggest to uninstall and re-install the media player to see if this cures the problem, with intention of restoring the communication links between the browser and the media player.

Finally, you could try an alternative media player from here: http://majorgeeks.com/downloads32.html - for example WinAmp in an attempt to workaround the windows media player/browser problem.

I've tried various different drivers in the past and they have all failed, so I don't think graphics drivers are the problem. Well, WMP doesn't seem to be able to play WMV videos at all even if I download them first. I've also tried lowering the graphics acceleration, but I still get the same error. I've just tried uninstalling/reinstalling and I get the same error. I've been using TCMP as an alternative player for a while, but it bothers me not to be able to use WMP for streams and whatnot.

Hmm, that's a puzzler. One of a few possibilities: a) you've got a corrupt install of Windows Media Player, b) something is interfering or surplanted one or more of the files that Windows Media Player needs, c) Windows Media Player is not compatible with your system. Did do you do a re-download prior to uninstalling/re-installing? Was Windows Media Player 10 already installed on your system? Have you tried uninstalling version 10 and installing version 9?

I think you may need to contact a specialist Newsgroup or forum on Windows Media Player:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ select English\Windows Media\Windows Media Player in the left hand pane. Notice the numerous problems people are having with the Windows Media Player.
    Have a look at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/communities/mediaplayer.mspx

Also, I suggest that you follow through these sites at Microsoft:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/errors.aspx
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/troubleshooting.aspx
    http://support.microsoft.com/ph/7021
The first would have helped if you got an error code.

Well, I started messing around with the settings and I think I've found the problem. In WMP, I went to Tools > Options > Performance Tab > Advance and checked "Use high quality mode" instead of "Use overlays." This seems to fix all the crashing that has been going on. Thanks for the help anyway.
