Been battling my daughters laptop for a while.
Doing read and run me first when I could get the machine to respond at all.
I think it may be clean now, logs attached.

My linksys wrt54g router got its DNS settings hijacked in the midst of all this.
I had reset it a few months ago and forgot to re-do the security settings.
I am back on opendns for DNS server now. Does the dns hijack add any extra steps? Does just turning the WEP back on and not having the default password anymore protect the router's settings?

    thanks!

I forgot to mention... I have some older logs too.
I have always been able to correct the girls mistakes without help
so I didn't follow procedures and stop after the first time through the run me first.

    Hello, jethrine

You should be considering upgrading to a larger hard drive or freeing up some space soon:

    Drive C:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 71.45 GB (76,717,182,976 bytes)
Free Space 8.03 GB (8,622,219,264 bytes)

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links.[ C:\Documents and Settings\CarolineM\desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Open Task Manager by pressing ctrl + alt + delete keys simultaneously
    • Click Processes
    • Click Image Name to Alphabetize the list
    • Find each of the below -
      ccSetMgr.exe
      ccEvtMgr.exe
      aawservice.exe

      and click on it
    • Click End Process
    • Repeat these steps for each process listed above
    Now close Task Manager

    Step 2:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following outdated prgrams and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 3:
Now run this and reboot > run it again:
    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) 2009.0.5.26

    Step 4:
    Did you set this proxy?
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:1043

If not, please follow these instructions:
    Proxy Server - Changing Settings

    Step 5:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 6:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 7:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 8:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 9:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    Thanks Dr M.

The machine has been OK so far, but all I have done is the procedure you posted above. No problems through that.
I still need to get my daughter to clean out her files, unused programs and clean up the desktop.

    log attached...

    thanks again Dr M,

    Justin

    You're welcome, Justin.

Okay , I had a syntax error in my script - let's redo a portion of it.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:" part of the window.
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the "Reboot now?" question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Now run this online scan:

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Please attach the ESETScan.txt and the C:\avenger.txt logs to your next reply. Let me know how the machine is working.

Was out of town for a week, came home and broke my heel.
Surgery and some mandated bedrest time and I'm back on this machine.

I forgot to run ccleaner before running the esets online scan.
I assume the ccleaner was just to speed up the scan?
Let me know if I need to re-run the scan correctly with
    ccleaner first.

    thanks,
    Justin

Glad to hear that you're on the mend after your accident.

    Yes.

How is the machine running now?
