I hate roaches!

I turned on my PC this morning, and in my normal routine, I sat down ready for another exciting day at the keyboard.

All of a sudden, two huge black cockroaches came racing out of my front air intake.

These weren't your everyday cockroaches, but Kamikaze roaches.

They looked at me for a split second, vibrated their wings, then hurtled toward my face.

Needless to say I catapulted myself out of my seat and ran screaming.

The were last seen scurrying toward my curtains.

I was last seen running out of my house.

I hate, no make that loathe, cockroaches.

I don't go in for the running and screaming, but I'm right with you on the loathing.

Where I lived prior to here, an apartment, the management must have fumigated one or more apartments near mine shortly before I moved out. All the refugee roaches seemed to find MY place, and it started to feel like I was living "Joe's Apartment", except the roaches didn't talk to me or find me dates. When I moved out I packed everything VERY carefully, sealed airtight, and before moving into my house, EVERYTHING that might hide roaches spent a few days minimum in my unheated garage with the door cracked open a bit. Luckily, this was end of December and an uncommon cold wave had overnight temps in the low 20s, which will kill roaches. More inspection in the garage before moving things into the house. I did manage to move without them, but I kept sticky traps around for a long time to monitor for them. Once they get a toehold, it's darn near impossible to get rid of them.

Glad to see I'm not alone in my hatred.

I'm far from embarrassed at screaming and jumping if they get too close.

If that makes me feminine or a wimp, so be it. I like reptiles, snakes, spiders, just not filthy roaches.

Don't know if you guys get them, but some of the roaches here actually fly.

They are the worst, and I don't mean those tiny brown German roaches, but the big black American roaches.

They love hot summer nights and you see them flying around street lamps.

Why is it we have German cockroaches in Memphis, and you have American cockroaches in Sydney? Is there a Cockroach Airlines that ferries immigrants around the world?

My sister lived in northern Florida for a while. They had some kind of outdoor 5" long flying cockroaches there. You could step on them sideways and have roach sticking out from both sides of your shoe.

Ewwww, 5" roaches. The thought makes me shudder. Matacumbie would love them, as a summer treat or snack. :)

Thanks a lot America for another import.

Not enough to give us Cane Toads and Billy Ray Cyrus, but American Cockroaches as well!

And we're supposed to be allies?

    WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

I have lived in my house for over 20 YRS, and I've never seen more than several cockroaches a year, ever.

Today alone, I have seen and killed over a dozen, I kid you not.

The even stranger thing is that they aren't behaving like "normal" roaches.

They aren't scared or scurrying, and seem as if they are drunk.

They keep coming out (this is daytime) from either the computer, my wall painting, desk etc.

I don't even like sitting in my computer room anymore.

    I need an exorcist!

Roaches are like the plague! *shudder*

When our rude obnoxious neighbors had to move...who we initially thought were a mother and son (she mid to late 50's, he roughly late 20;'s) turned out to be married couple and they we found out essentially lived in a pigsty. Before the unit could be sold it had to be gutted right down to the studs and they hadn't even lived there a full year! Needless to say all their household 'guests' needed new accommodations to.

To make a long story short..we had an unwelcome visitor one evening...a critter looking for a new home and it was big enough to have walked off with my mouse if it wanted too! *THUD* Luckily due to it's size they are easy to catch cuz they move slow so it was quickly nabbed and given a proper flush down the commode and the exterminator was here the next day to ensure we didn't get any more visits. That is the only time I have seen one here. We won't talk about the gal's apt. I went to so I could fix her puter....Chris...no comments from you!!! LMAO

One good thing about living in condos is part of the services is they exterminate the outside of the buildings once a month and if you need inside extermination the team is here every Wednesday. You just give the office a call and they send them right over and it only costs $15.00. We usually have them come through in the fall of the year when we see an increase in itsy bitsy spiders.:)

I don't like spiders either and have been known to throw something at them in order to kill them from a distance.:D

We had an *cough* incident here that had Chris laughing HYSTERICALLY! At MY expense of course! I had just trimmed my bangs..grabbed a tissue out of the box to brush the little hairs off my face and felt something odd..looked in the mirror and there was a spider about an inch long (including legs) running across my face! I FREAKED! Screamed bloody murder..swatting at my face..ift fell in the bathroom sink and ran into one of those drain holes...Chris knew by the 'tone' of my scream that I had discovered a 'bug' so he was already chuckling when he got to the bathroom..then lost it when he saw the expression on my face. Oiy! LMAO

Now when I take a kleenex out of the box..mind you it's been 3 years..I always look first...take the tissue out and give it a good shake before I use it.:D

When I was out in Crete they have enormous roaches there. They are big, black and have a huge wing span when they fly, which they love to do at night. You can close the shutters and everything - they still get in and make such a racket flying at night. All you can do is pull the sheets up over your head and hope for the best.

Now, I'm with Demented on this one. I have chronic arachnophobia. Demeneted makes mention to a "heart attack" at the smallest spider...and I don't think he is exaggreating. There have been times when I have seriously worried that my little ticker won't make it through the experience. Compared to Oregon, the spiders in the UK are wayyyy bigger. But the little critters in Oregon bite. Have it either way, I don't care.......I'm the one having a full-on panic attack when there's a spider in the room and no-one else can even see it. They're busy wondering what meds I might have forgot to take!!!

You find that Demented? You have a sixth sense to know where a spider is without having even see it head on?

  17. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Abbysue? You haven't taken a kleenex out of a box in 3 years??? :p

Seriously though.....that's how phonic I am. Once an incident has occurred, I never go through that action again without double checking first thoroughly. My brother ONCE as a kid brought me a dead spider, and told me he had found it at the bottom of my bed under the covers.

Now logic says why would a 9 year old boy be under his sister's covers looking for dead spiders anyway lol (don't go there!). I knew he had found it somewhere and made the story up. But still, to this day, I will strip back the covers to check before I get in a bed. And the routine I have before using a towel would just make you want to deny you ever knew me :D As I said, we have big house spiders in England!

    HAHAHA Lev!:p

I know exactly what you are saying! Found a bug in my shoe once so I have a routine for that too. Chris (if he's in a hurry) will often perform the 'bug check' routine for me...right in front of me where I can see him do it but it's not good enough! I still have to do it myself or I can't put my shoes on.:(

  19. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

I hear you. And if they do find a bug, do you have to then check them, to make sure its not stayed on them before you hug them? I made the mistake of not doing that once. NEVER NEVER again! Another routine hehe! :)

  20. AbbySue

    AbbySue MajorGeeks Administrator

Roaches are like horses, they know if you are afraid of them. When they see you prancing around and screaming they know your scared.

They also get in the bed at night, something about the sheets. Gives me the heeby jeeby's just thinking about it.

Oh well, sleep tight. Me and Star will be thinking about you.......and them :D

Poison isn't an option, I hate the stuff.

For the members here that hate spiders, don't ever come to Australia.

They are an occupational hazard, and the ones here are deadly.

Spiders I like, roaches I want to kill. I even put one in a plastic container in the Microwave and it didn't do a thing, on high!

    They are invincible.

Roaches are no big deal. Even coming out of your PC.

We had a call awhile back for a problem with one of our DSLAM systems installed over in India. Apparently the system crashed and they said it smelled like it was burning. We go there to see what's wrong and we went nuts when we found an 8 foot long cobra stuck inside the system. Apparently he/she crawled in there for warmth but got stuck and hit some of the wrong pathways and shorted out the power unit. Also fried himself at the same time.

I think that we should invite Insomniac to Tennesse for some snipe hunting! Star could film it, if he bagged one, and Lev and AbbySue could cheer him on and give him tips on how to cook it. Might help with the roach problem!:)

there are snipes in tennessee? I thought they were indigenous
to the midwest!:) when i was little, we had a wood burning
stove. I can't tell you how many roaches and spiders i had
to knock out of my hair. blech! the little beasts can survive
nuclear fallout and live for months on a drop of oil.

ha, I live in western Oregon, I have never even seen a wild roch, just those awesome ones at the zoo that hiss. The onlt annoying criters here are bees and spiders, I freaking hate bees! my sister steeped on a yellow jacket nest last year and got stung 6 times, so of coure me and my friend walked down there and dumped chemicals in the nest, thing like 20/10 windshield cleaner, apparently the bees didn't like that because I got stung in the head. as far as other critters go, i love snakes and reptiles, i have a pair of leopard geckos in my room and I like to catch garter snakes, and if i am lucky a bull snake in the spring. I used to get dozens of them from a tiny little field but it got posted NO TRESSPASSING so i haven't really gotten any snakes since.

  34. @insomniac
The reason the miocrowave didnt kill the roach is because they are the only thing that can survive a neuclear fallout. Thus they are resistant to the alpha, gamma, and beta waves from the microwave (or as i like to call it,the nuker.). I say time to get a can of raid and spray the computer down or here is my mom's idea, get a can of lysol and spray the vermin with it and they will die from the stuff in it. Lysol kills all. period. Or plan b give the exterminator a call.

You sure? The radiation is given off as heat. I'm thinking a piece of metal will survive nuclear fallout, yet will heat up in a microwave.

    I'd experiment, but I don't have any roaches ;)

Insomniac, if you're seeing roaches in the open in the daytime, you may already have a substantial infestation. They are generally nocturnal, and are usually pretty good at staying out of sight. Generally, by the time you stumble onto them, they're getting crowded in their best hiding places. You can fight them without highly toxic chemicals, but you really do need to fight them intelligently. The old cliche "Ignore it and it will go away" does NOT work with roaches. Read up here for their habits and what works.

I wonder what damage they may do to the insides of the system. They used to sell this stuff on TV called Roach Prufe. It was 96% boric acid, easily obtained at any pharmacy or drugstore. We tried a can, and opted for the latter after it was gone. Either worked when I lived in Lousy-anna. We were clean, but had fields behind our home and the roaches were there regardless of what we did.

Here, at least, roaches need to be introduced to the household first. We deal with brown roaches, usually. Sewer roaches, well, I've not had to deal with those, almost ever.

we have roaches so big they frighten the dog! some of ours fly and are 'affectionately' known as B 52's. in my (now extensive) experience, raid works best, borick acid in the kitchen, and sticky traps dont work at all (but do catch mice). if you see baby roaches it means you're winning the war as this means the adults are all dead!

  44. G.T.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Well... not quite. You may see baby roaches because you happened to look near where one of the egg pods just launched a new crop of babies.

Sprays give the most emotional satisfaction, as you actually see the sucker DIE. :D

But roaches smell the sprays and avoid it. If you don't shoot them directly, they just detour around it. Boric acid is good, because it's NOT airborne, and doesn't hurt people, as long as you're cautious where you spread it. And you have to spread it where they'll walk through it. It IS poisonous to humans, so keep it away from food and eating utinsels. Baits are also good; no harm to humans and you can put them anywhere. Best thing about boric acid and baits is that the roaches that get killed by it get eaten by other roaches, poisoning THEM back in their nests. Share the love. :D

boric acid is poisonous? oh sh*t! i have it scattered around my food cuboards and utensil drawers precisely because i thought it was safe for human beans. as far as the raid goes...here's the trick. empty the can! go around each door, window, along the skirting (base boards), under, in, and on top of everything. do this once every three months. it works like the bombs, but better. you are right about the satisfaction of seeing the damm things die tho. dead or dieing roaches generally get eaten by ants over here. ants are another battle!! but hey..there's a downside to everything, even blue skies and sunshine.

Um... yes. Don't you read labels? I use Victor (brand) which is 100% boric acid. Here's their label instructions. Read it carefully.

    http://householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/household/brands?tbl=brands&id=23014001

Boric acid is not a high level poison like arsenic, but it's not something you want to be eating regularly, nor touching regularly, as it's also an eye and skin irritant, and is a fine powder, which blows around easily. It's great in out-of-the way places, but has NO business in your cupboards and drawers.

That has nothing to do with it.

The reason they survive a microwave is because of their exoskeleton, which most insects have.

That is, they don't have a skeleton on the inside, but a shell on the outside (in layman's terms) which protects them.

To everyone else who is enjoying my misery, it's over. Haven't see a roach since! :p

My brother-in-law smashes them with his bare hand. EWWWWWWW.

I even saw my dog killing one with his mouth.

Good use for it. It does do a good job of keeping some of the critters outside from coming inside. But once they're in, it's not the best strategy.
