    Hi All

I'm working on removing sirefef.y from a friend's computer. The operating system is 64 bit Vista. I've seen other posts and they specify that the fix file is unique, so I'm making a new post.

I've attached the standard FRST.txt and the search.txt (searching for services.exe) as done in other posts. Both were done in system repair mode.

Help on this will be much appreciated.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, psquared76 :)

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

    Attached is fixlist.txt
    • Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.

    Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (How to attach)

Now reboot normally and remember to attach your Fixlog.txt.

It would be appreciated if you would upload the services.exe file from C:\FRST\Quarantine to here for further analysis once you have finished running the FRST Fix.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for the help thisisu!

I ran the fixlist.txt file and the computer now does not continuously reboot...this allowed for a full scan using MSE which found sirefef as well as two java related issues.

The services.exe file has been sumbitted to the link provided for further analysis.

However, the PC still has programs which will not run (windows firewall, catalyst video card software, etc.). So I still believe there is either a virus...or the virus did some damage that needs repair.

Right now I'm running a full scan with Malwarebytes to see if it finds anything.

The computer has Vista 64 SP2...the owner has the install disk, but it only has SP1...can this be used to repair windows?

    Does anyone have additional recommendations?

I've worked through the Malware removal guide and attached the recommended scans.

Rogue Killer found 3 registry entries...but I didn't delete them.

Certain functionality is still disabled...for instance, Windows Security Center and Firewall are turned off, and I'm not able to restart them. Other programs are out of commission as well.

Should I delete the 3 entries found by Rogue Killer?

    No, leave these alone.

[IMG] From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 30 (outdated)
    __

[IMG] I want you to read and follow these instructions: TDSSKiller - How to run

    __

[IMG] Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now open Repair_Windows.exe
    • Go to the Start Repairs tab.
    • Press the Start button
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • In the Repair Options window, choose the following repairs:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Remove Temp Files
    • Place a checkmark in Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Fill in the Restart System bubble
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items. Your computer should automatically restart when finished.

    __

[IMG] Now install the current version of Sun Java from: here

    __

[IMG] Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by right-mouse clicking it and then selecting Run as Administrator
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

Let me know of any remaining problems after you have completed these steps.

These steps seem to have done the trick.

Thanks again for the help...for a while I thought a reinstallation of windows was inevitable.

Should I create a system restore point today, or wait a while?

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware related problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    • Any programs we had you download and/or install can be removed at this time.
    • If we had you download and run ComboFix, here is how to uninstall it:
      • Press and hold the Windows key [IMG] and then press the letter R on your keyboard.
      • This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below text inside the text-field:
        • "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix" /uninstall
      • Now press ENTER
      • ComboFix will extract its files one last time and you should receive a notification that ComboFix has been uninstalled shortly after.
    • You can re-enable your Disk Emulation software at this time via DeFogger.
    • If we had you create or download a registry patch or "fix" script, these can be deleted at this time.
    • Go into the C:\MGtools folder and run the MGclean.bat file to remove additional traces of our tools.
    • Now we will toggle System Restore to remove any infected system restore points.
    • Lastly, here is a guide to protect you from future infections: How to Protect yourself from malware!
    • Be safe :)
