A PC has an FSB speed of 400MHz (4x100MHz) and DDR memory specified as PC2700 (DDR-333MHz) [celeron 2.7GHz]

If the processor were changed for one (P4 3.06GHz) that had an FSB 533MHz (4x166MHz) would it still work with the same memory ?

The motherboard supports both FSB speeds.

Supplementary: although the m/b specification (this document) says that it supports P4's with speeds up to 3.06GHz, and hyperthreading, what is the opinion of MG experts on installing the max. spec.processor that it seems can be supported on a m/b of this vintage ? Would it push the capabilities of an old m/b beyond its in-practice capabilities ?

The more important question is will the BIOS support the alternate CPU. The OEM may not have an update with the necessary Unicode. Fortunately, the doc says it's compatible.

The memory should be supported by a later model CPU without issue.

I don't think it would be worth it. For one, any CPUs that may be compatible are surely long out of production. So you will be stuck with used and/or something very expensive.

You say the PSU was upgraded - but the reality is 250 to 300 is not much of an upgrade. Octigen is not known for building quality PSUs (and the £13.00 price supports that). So you may need to really upgrade the PSU in the process.

Then there's the fact that motherboard itself if very old (the fact it only supports AGP 4x puts it over 10 years old). And then there's the fact support for XP will end in less than a year.

Therefore, I would save your money until the budget allows you to upgrade your whole system.
