What I am trying to do is connect two laptops through an ad-hoc style network and then connect the first to a LAN using a bridge between the Wireless and LAN connections.

I have already set up the bridge and it works. In addition the wireless connection is in place, but even though the laptops are 2 feet apart, the connection is extreamly weak. I am using Windows XP pro with SP2.

Any ideas on how to increase the signal or change the signal frequency?

Tried messing with the Channels? use like 2 on one and 11 on another?
I honestly thonk it's not going to help, but since noone else has chirped up a response, just thought I'd offer that... :(

Instead of using the Windows wireless setup I used the software that came with the D-Link wireless card on the second machine. I still get a "not connected" message, but I am able to ping both machines and transfer data. In addition the signal is still low. I have tried different levels of security, and different frequencies too. I am still getting low signal.

if you are using the d-link software then disable windows wireless zero configuration. Go into the control panel, select network connections, select the properties of your wireless network adapter and find an option like "allow windows to manage wireless connection" and uncheck it.
