PLEASE Help this stupid female out

    Hello

Earlier today I found something on this site that I totally didn't understand about removing dr.webservicehosts.com from a computer. And now I can't find it again.

So I need some help.......................... I do not have this problem while using my computer in MSN9 but when I open explorer to check a free email account the address bar changes from the email site that I typed in to dr.webservicehosts.com. I don't know how to get rid of it. Also I can use explorer to go to any other site but the email site that I try to open just fine.

So between last night and today I have ran webroot spy sweeper, Panda ActiveScan 5.52 and right now I am running BitDefender.

So what else do I have to do to get rid of dr.webservicehosts?

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I will admit that I am a stupid female so please take it easy on me. You will have to walk me through each step because I don't know much at all about anything dealing with removing things from a computer. If it is not in ad/remove then I am in trouble LOL

    Thanks for your help :)

Re: PLEASE Help this stupid female out

    Welcome to MGs!

Maybe you are referring to the first page of the below thread:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=58014

However the procedure you need to follow is below!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

    Hello

It's me again. I have done everything that you have said to do in the Read & Run me First before asking for support" section.

The only thing is when I went to run the online scan from Panda in Explorer it would go to the dr.wedservicehosts page, so to run that scan I had to run it in MSN Explorer. I hope that is ok but I tried several times to do it in Internet Explorer and it happened everytime.

Here are the attachments of the Bitdefender, Panda and Highjackthis.

Please help me to be able to get rid of the dr.webservicehosts pages that come up in Explorer. They are driving me crazy and plus I can't check some of my email accounts.

    Thanks
    DJ

Please go back to step 7 of the READ ME and read all of it and install HijackThis properly. Do this now before continuing. You installed it exactly where we request that it not be installed. You have it here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Nana\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

Did you look in Add/Remove programs for WinTools, New.Net or NewDotNet, Gator and Gain and uninstall if found? If not, please do so.

Now log into each user account (one at a time) and run Ccleaner on each account.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?uid=-2137095473&id=5.0

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
C:\Documents and Settings\Debi-Jill\Local Settings\Temp <--- delete all files in this Temp folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Windows SyncroAd <--- the whole FLEOK folder
C:\TEMP\FLEOK <--- the whole FLEOK folder
    C:\WINDOWS\INF\conscorr.inf

    C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall5_64.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_10.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_22.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\enhtb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\enhtb.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hello again

Ok I went back and re installed HighJackThis again. This time I think I got it right but like I said I am a stupid female so I really am not sure ;)

"Did you look in Add/Remove programs for WinTools, New.Net or NewDotNet, Gator and Gain and uninstall if found? If not, please do so." I had already done this. Or there again at least I tried to do this.

"Now log into each user account (one at a time) and run Ccleaner on each account." Done I hope it is right!

"Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial)." Done.......again I hope it is right!

"Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:........"
Done.............Hope it is right yet again.

    "After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode" Hey what can I say even a stupid female can do this one :)

"and use Windows Explorer to delete........" I really am NOT sure if I did this right but I tried and if I look for them in "search" they are no longer there.

"Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder." I tried to do this but could not find it

"Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)." I am getting pretty good at doing this one :)

"Now we need to Reset Web Settings:" Done

"Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log." Now I am back to being the stupid female again......... don't know if you want the log from before the changes were made or after? So I am attaching the one from AFTER I did everything you told me to do.

"Make sure you tell me how things are working now." FINALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WEEK I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CHECK MY EMAIL WITH OUT the dr.webservicehosts blocking it :) :) :) <Happy Dance>

Thanks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE let me know if there is anything else I need to do before I "DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE."

    Thanks :)

    You're welcome.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!
