Is this a smart thing to do? I have heard that it could possibly restore a lot of unused space to your hard drive (which I could use). However, I've also been told that it is not a good thing. Is it safe to attempt this?

These days on NTFS yes its more stable than it used to be... BUT I still wouldnt use it for a few reasons

    1. HDs are alot cheeper than they used to be and adding a 2nd one is a good way to free up space on your OS drive. ( unless laptop where maybe a new larger HD or External HD maybe needed )

    2. Speed... you will have a slowdown of PC performance as a compressed file needs decompressing thus using up RAM/HD and CPU time.
