cannot start in safe mode

okay, I have been trying to enter safe mode to do virus and spyware scans because I have been having problems with spyware. The problem is that when I try to reboot in safe mode nothing happens. It just starts normally. I have tried over and over again but it just dont work. A couple times a little message popped up but it was there and gone too fast for me to read it. Any ideas?

 

Can you boot up with a Bootdisk, or attempt a Repair with the Windows XP Cd-Rom. Since it is not booting into SAFE mode, their is deffinitely some work to do in cleaning the machine, if that is the case.

 

well the problem i have with aht is i have serv pack 2 and my disc is serv pack one . what should i do? i should have never got serv pack 2 to begin with

 

your problem isnt with SP2, its with your own PC protection and obviously the websites you surf; you can try adaware, hijackthis!, and spybot search & destroy as solutions to fixing your problems.

 

I have adaware and will get some of the other programs too but would spyware be preventing me from entering safe mode?

 

If the machine is heavily laden, it could. Is the problem happening during the Boot to Safe Mode process, or when you are trying to log in under Safe Mode?

 

ok heres what happens. I restart the pc and hit F8 during the dell splash and before the windows splash. And usually it just starts right up normally like I didn't even do anything. There were a a couple times that a messaged popped up before the windows splash but it was gone before I even had a chance to read it. So I am not even getting to the menu where you select which type of safe mode or to start normally. It just starts up just like normal. I really havent had any severe problems so far just running slow and adaware is finding quite a few things everytime I run it. So I tried to go in safe mode and hopefully take care of it.

i finally rebooted in safe mode through safeboot running msconfig, what i think is happening is my option to hit f8 for my boot menu is only like a 2 second window and i cant hit it fast enough but regardless i got safe mode to start and all i found through scanning were negligable files so looks like all is well. spybot however found alot of damaged files that it fixed or removed so that was very useful, hijack this is a different story though , i will read through that tutorial and see what i can do or find that might be wrong, thank you all for your help though especially priz! you guys are really nice for helping stupid people

 

You have HijackThis install incorrectly. Reinstall HijackThis to C:\HJT.

After you have reinstalled HijackThis fix the following lines:

Your HijackThis file shows no signs of infection. It is entirely possible that Norton is causing your problem. Uninstall Norton completely then reinstall it.

 

OK I CLICKED FIX ON THOSE FILES. SORRY FOR THE CAPS, so i am just going to do what you said and uninstal then reinstall nortons. thank you for your help
