question on the best method for NAS backup, RAID 1 or NAS2NAS?

I'm playing with the idea of getting a 2 bay NAS with 2 1tb drives and RAID-1 them for data protection, or buying two 1bay NAS's with a 1tb drive a piece

I'm curious as to if RAID-1 will function effectively with a 1tb drive with file sizes ranging from a couple megs to 4-8 gigs. Also, if the NAS itself fails and thus the RAID controller, are the two drives useless or can they be put into another NAS and come up just fine? this is why i'm considering two single NAS's and use NAS backup, however one box would be better and cheaper.
