Do I have to use a voip service, like Vonage or can I do my own?

Yes you need some sort of voip service that connections your voip equipment to the pots telephone network.

You can, but you need a box & software to create your own internal VoIP network. Check out Asterisk http://www.asterisk.org/ also http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/ Basically VoIP works by routing telephone calls through a network, then connecting to a outside line such as POTS, or T1 if wanting to push the VoIP calls to another location (ie PBX set up). Linksys also sells VoIP hardware for a PBX set up.
