I've gone through all the steps in the readme and run first.

Everything seemed to check out okay but now I'm having trouble getting online and a new spybot scan revealed new infections so I thought you could take a look at my hijack this log (attached) and tell me where to go from here.

    Thanks

Reading the steps and actually running them are two different things!

Most people are under the very mistaken misconception that HijackThis is a malware removal tool. It is not! HijackThis is simply a tool that is used to identify browser hijackers and in some cases it will show entries for 'some' malware that is for instance running at startup. All it does is list a few of the thousands of registry keys that exist and it makes no inferences to whether anything being shown is good or bad. HijackThis does not come close to showing all malware that could be hiding on a PC. Anyone who has an infected computer and is relying on HijackThis without the benefit of running other scans such as Spybot, Windows Defender, BitDefender & Panda, CCleaner, etc. are more than likely still infected. In most cases, where there is one virus/trojan there are more. The goal of this forum is to remove all malware, and this cannot be done properly by just seeing a HijackThis log. And when HijackThis is not installed properly or renamed as requested in the READ ME, it is even less useful.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Please check my logs

I've completed all the steps in the readme and run first list... I hope I did it all right.

I'm not sure everything's clean so I'm posting my logs.

I was able to complete everything including the online scans and several things were found and supposedly removed.

Re: Please check my logs - panda and hjt logs

Please do not start new threads for you problem! Once you begin a thread for a particular problem on a PC, you must remain in the thread you started. I'm merging you back to your original thread.

You appear to be using an old version of ShowNew. When did you last download it? It was changed to version 0.12 on 8/15/2006 which was before you even started this thread.

Based on your newfiles.txt log you have not installed Spybot. Why not?

Please install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Then uninstall the below software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <--- old version not needed
Viewpoint Media Player <--- malware should have been uninstalled in step 0 of READ ME

Do you know what the below file is?
    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pxhpinst.exe

Do you or did you ever run Picasa?

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O9 - Extra button: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\WINDOWS\system32ghynf.exe

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

The reason I started a new thread was that this is for a different computer.

Okay! Then why didn't you ever finish responding to the first thread. But based on the two HJT logs, it looks like the same or very similar PC.

--You appear to be using an old version of ShowNew. When did you last download it?
Must have been right before the update.

--Based on your newfiles.txt log you have not installed Spybot. Why not?
I'm pretty sure I ran it at the time I downloaded all the things from the readme list.

--Do you know what the below file is?
    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pxhpinst.exe
    Don't Know

--Do you or did you ever run Picasa?
    Never Heard of it.

    everything else....
    done. New HJT log attached.

How is everything running right now?

It appears that you did not do the Reset Web Settings!

Also why are you running MSconfig:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

We specifically instruct you not to do this in step 7 of the READ ME.

Everything seems to be running okay. I'm still having some intermittent freezing for about 20 seconds, then everything returns to normal.

I did reset the web settings as instructed.

Should I reset them again, set to normal startup and post a new HJT log?

Shut down AOL antispyware and anything else that could be protecting web pages or other registry settings. Then try the Reset of Web settings. Use www.majorgeeks.com for your start page (at least temporarily) so we can see the effect.

Also select Normal Startup in MSconfig. Then attach a new HJT log.

You do not show any other signs of malware. If you are still having intermittant freezing, try right clicking on the ZoneAlarm icon in your tray and select Shutdown ZoneAlarm. Do you still have freezing? If so, does it only occur while online and while running AOL? Do not leave ZoneAlarm off even if it s the cause of your slow downs.

Actually, the freezing has been going on since long before I put zone alarm on that machine. I've submitted a thread on that issue alone in the software forum but no solutions yet.

    Try what I said anyway!

Also try uninstalling AOL and see what happens.
