 I followed instructions listed in 'getting prepared to scan'. I'm using XPpro. I was unable to get to the internet, in safe mode w/networking- to do a scan. So, I go back into normal mode...try to use Trend Micro again.. All I get, is my IE windows shut down. I'm very confused...I am able to go anywhere else, on the net. It's like something is preventing me to use Trend. Help Pleeeeze :)

I am certainly no expert in fact i come on here for help not to give it but i had the same problem as you. The reason you have the problem is that you have probably done the same as me as put trendmicro scan into your favourites and you just double click on it in normal mode to get it working, which you cannot do in safe mode without your browser.
You will therefore have to somehow get it to the desktop or to its own file so that you can go into safe mode and run it using C:\ or using the Desktop. In fact you may not even need to move it as it may be in C:\ and it may be able to access it in safe mode by going into favourites in C:\.
Now this is where i dont want to send you wrong so i shall await someone better qualified to help you and shall also await with interest to see if i have done you a favour (which means im learning) or whether i should just shut-up ;-))

Is the TrendMicro scan the only thing you cannot do? Did the Symantec scan work okay?

If you are having other problems with malware that need to be worked continue with the rest of the READ ME FIRST sticky and let us know what state you are in when finished. We'll take it from there.

I also bet you can't open/run your standard anti-virus program. I also wager that if you go to google in normal or safe mode and type in "antivirus" (one of a number of security-related search terms that do this), you will discover that your mozilla or IE browser will suddenly close.

I also bet that if you try and look at processes in task manager, they are greyed out.

Your firewall software may also be disabled. Regedit and msconfig may not be working either.

This thread sheds some additional light on this problem. If you have these symptoms, very likely you have a variant of the trojan horse described here. I have it now and I have spent a day and a half trying to get rid of it (even called Microsoft). It is an absolute bitch.
