Just took at look at my Temp Folder in the Windows Folder. Sure are a lot of files in there. Do I need them? Most have a .tmp at the end, but lots of them do not. Can I delete them? Is there a maintenance item I should be doing?

You should not need any of them. The temp folder is where files are temporarily placed during installations. You may have seen the message "extracting to temporary folder" or similar on install.

    frybo,

While we're at it, you might want to check your OTHER active Temp folder as well. You've certainly got one in Windows and there's another in Local Settings in each of Username, Administrator, Default User, and Local Service. The Temp folder under Username\Local Settings is actively used by the system; the others, usually not.

Checking Username\Local Settings\Temp and Windows\Temp is a weekly exercise I try to remember. Installations can dump files in either one, and some of your apps will dump files there, too.

If your firewall or anti-v program runs a temp file all the time, it probably uses the Windows\Temp folder, but apps and installs are much more likely to dump temps in the Username Temp.

No, read his post. He is running Windows 98. Ignore the above post to save confusion frybo.

Wow, I sure got rid of a bunch of files. There are several which are called Applications that I could not delete because I got the "Cannot delete ... make sure disk not full or write protected and file not in use" message. One is a 1,272 MB app from MusicMatch. I haven't had MusicMatch in my computer for six months. Any ideas of how to get rid of it? Thanks.

Possibly you can remove it from DOS. Another possibility is right after a reboot. Yet another is its still being called from startup or in your registry, possibly. And for kicks, right click on the file and make sure read only isnt checked.

A lot of times you can do an "alt-ctrl-delete", and see the program running in the Task Manager. Then you can just shut down the program from there, then uninstall it.:)

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be gone for several days, but will try the suggestions when I get back.
