I am planning to install one module of 512 mbs of RAM adding to the two 128 mb sticks I have now. The two 128s are dual channel. Should the new stick be in open slot 3 or should it go in slot 1 since it is the largest module?

I think that with dual channel mem you have to install TWO mem cards at a time. Not one.

Try reading his post again, I think you'll find his 512 isn't a dual channel, only his two 128's ;)

Anyway to answer your question, I don't think it really effects which slot you would put it in, but normally it's best to have your 512 in slot 1 and the two 128's in slots 2 & 3 :D

Right. He has two 128's, and he wants to install ONE 512 .
I was under the impression that if your system utilizes dual channel memory, you have to install memory cards in PAIRS ONLY.
Thats how I was told to do it with my dual channel memory .
Am I wrong about this ?

Aah, I understand now, I think I mis-interperated your post FED UP. Please accept my apologies :) However, adding one stick of 512 should still work in most systemsif I remember correctly.

Please forgive me if I am wrong ;)

Jerseydevil, what is your motherboard model and version?

as to keep your Dual Channel speed/setup you will ahve to install as said earlier a pair of ram modules in a specific order in the ram slots, if not the system will revert to single channel ( thus loosing out of the benefits of Dual Channel ) or actually may not boot.

Mobo manual will give all combinations of positioning of ram and what types ( Dual/Single )

I have a DEll dimension. I thought that by installing only one additional module I would lose dual channel mode but the system would still work.

It may well work fine, but we can only answer on the info given and as such and with so many different specs of motherboard its crucial to have ram installed as per manufacturers guidelines and specifications as in some cases a PC wont boot, hence our warning. For all we know your DELL Dimension is the 8100 which uses RDRAM which MUST be installed in matched pairs.

So thats why its always a good thing to check the manual or support site for your model of PC, DELL do have some really good guides and support docs so go here http://support.dell.com/ enter your model number and you will find all the info you need on positioning of the ram.
