Strange ads

I was given a friends computer to look at. There are strange pop-up ads and she just said she's having issues with it, so I ran the scans in the forum. Can someone take a look for me?

Rogue Killer didn't find anything and didn't seem to create a log. Malware-Bytes wouldn't let me export a log, it crashed when I tried. It did quarantine a bunch of stuff.

    Thanks! :)

    Hello, edpolakoff

You have no logs from MalwareByte's in the "C:\Users\Meghan\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\" directory. Did you make sure that ALL protection software is disabled and also close all other applications including your browser while running it and RogueKiller? Did you try Safe Mode with Networking?

Using "Programs & Features" uninstall: (If you do not find it or it will not uninstall, just keep going.)
    Java 7 Update 45

Re-run HitmanPro and fix these detections:
    Potential Unwanted Programs
    Ignore all other detections.
    Afterwards, click the Next button.
HitmanPro may want to reboot the PC in order for the changes to take affect, please do so.
After reboot and when you are back in Windows, run another scan with HitmanPro and then attach the latest HitmanPro log.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • 02 - BHO: (no name) - {2C4BA31C-0C15-11E2-90C7-9BFCBEB168B3} - (no file)
    • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Files
    C:\Users\Meghan\Desktop\mbam-setup-majorgeeks-2.0.2.1012.exe
    C:\Windows\TEMP\*.*
    C:\Users\Meghan\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{4AA46D49-459F-4358-B4D1-169048547C23}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Next download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
    • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
    • Attach the logfile to your next next reply.
    • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Now install the current version of Sun Java from:
Make sure that when you install the new version of Java that you uncheck the Install the Ask Toolbar junkware checkbox. You do not want to add the stuff junk that most people consider malware to your PC. Also just in case Oracle changes the Java installation in the future to possible install other junk, uncheck all but just installing Java.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • AdwCleaner[R#].txt
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the help. So far, it seems to be doing ok, but this isn't my machine so my use of it is limited right now. I'm not seeing strange pop up ads and it seems to be running at a good clip.

As usual, I forgot to select what I wanted to delete in Hitman Pro and just removed everything. I always seem to forget to select what I want to remove (or not) before I hit next...

Here are the logs you asked for. I was able to run Malware Bytes and Rogue Killer at the beginning of this. If you need anything else, I'm happy to run them.

It's always a good idea to Print or Save the posted instructions. ;) Maybe you have access to another pc/laptop so you can view your thread while you work on the infected one?

Remember: Don't make any changes to the system other than following my instructions! It took awhile to compare the logs and research unexpected new entries.

*You did miss having HitmanPro remove those PUP removed as I requested. Please follow my instructions from post #2 carefully.
    Using AdwCleaner.exe previously downloaded:
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. (Vista, Win7/8 users should right-click and "Run As Administrator")
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • After the scan has finished..
    • Click on the Clean button.
    • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
    • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
    • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
    • Attach this log to your next reply.

Now run the following online scan - be aware that the scan might take over an hour to complete.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

    Then attach the below logs:
    • latest HitmanPro log
    • AdwCleaner[S#].txt
    • ESETScan.txt log

How is the machine running now?

Ok. Here's the scans you had asked for. I haven't seen a strange ad this morning. Again, I appreciate your help.

The problem I always seem to have with Hitman Pro is the interface isn't what I'm used to. Just about every other piece of software lets you hit next before you make choices about what to do next, Hitman doesn't do that. It gets me frequently...I hit next out of habit. I'm sorry I messed that one up.

    You're welcome, edpolakoff

Please repeat my quoted instructions for running HitmanPro, we have one stubborn left-over Potential Unwanted Programs to be rid of.

Attach the latest log from Hitman when completed.

There was only one thing that showed up in Hitman...it's been quarantined.

    ;) Now gone.

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase it, it provide no protection. It do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, Win 7/8 - it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7/8, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
    Safe surfing! [IMG]
