In windows 8.1, I used to be able to record a file being played in, for instance, VLC Player, or anything being played on a web site, but I no longer can.

Looking at Sound>Recording>Stereo Mix, the latter is enabled (ticked).

    What else can I do?

Have you checked the recording volume of Stereo Mix?

Yes I have Eldon, thank you.

    It's at about 85%.

The record level bars at the bottom of Cool Edit do move, but up to a very low level indeed. No signal appears in the main (waveform) window.

    It's most annoying.

I use this free Audio Recorder but not sure it's Win 10 ready. It includes Cool Edit features. I use it in conjunction with Audacity for doing all audio editing that I need. A very powerful combination.

    Eldon,

My antivirus software deleted the downloaded exe file when I tried to install the recorder. I noted, too, that the Major Geeks page for it carries warnings.

However, Audacity and Total Recorder both record audio being played with VLC player. Cool Edit still doesn't.

It's a simple and quick task to re-install Cool Edit, so I will do that.

    DON,

That's the same recorder referred to above and in Eldon's post.

I uninstalled Cool Edit and removed all traces of it with IOBit's Uninstaller.

Shortly after I had re-installed and ran it (it still didn't record) A window popped up on the desktop asking if the program was working satisfactorily, and if not, did I want to run it in compatibility mode.

    Yes.

    But it still isn't recording.

If I look in Cool Edit's Options, and then Windows Recording Mixer, this message appears on the screen:

    Whatever that means.

After repeating some actions, double checking settings and again telling the system to look for newer drivers, it is now working correctly. It records any audio I can hear in the 'speakers.

I have no idea what, if any, of my actions was the remedy. I was trying to attend to several things at the same time.

    Thank you for your interest.

Good to know it's fixed. And yes, I also don't like when a program 'fixes' itself. I want to know what was wrong!
Sorry for overlooking Audacity's recording feature.

FYI I use Cool Edit Pro's successor - Adobe Audition.

    Eldon,

When I first heard about Cool Edit there was a (limited) free version. I downloaded it, but didn't use it until a few months later. When I found out how good it was, I tried to buy the full version, which had been about $70 at the time, but unfortunately Adobe had swallowed Syntrillium and gave it not only a fancy new name but a fancy new price too. Well out of the financial reach of many amateur/hobby would-be users.

I subsequently bought a full version which was being sold by a studio here in the U.K.

What does Audition do that Cool Edit doesn't?

I'm not at all familiar with Cool Edit Pro. I'm using Adobe Audition 1 that was released in August 2003. It supports up to 128 tracks. You can read what Adobe did with Audition over the years.

Sadly, version 4, released in April 2011, was the last made available as a standalone product. Now you have to buy the whole Creative Suite. :cry

    Eldon,

IIRC, Cool Edit Pro evolved into Adobe Audition. I date back to CEP when the freeware version was crippled to permit only 2 effects at a time. I remember when it became Audition and priced me out of the market.

CEP had the best Noise Reduction function that I have ever seen to that date.
