    You are running your system without the nessecary updates, including service pack 2. You will need to do them when we are finished with your problem. This is a major security risk.

    Newfiles was either installed or run wrong. Re-read the instructions and when you are finished with this part, you will be asked to attach new logs.

    Delete the following folder:

    C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MPS\mps.exe

    Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Install and run: Ad-Aware SE

    Now attach new logs for:

    * GetRunKey - please download the current version first!
    * ShowNew
    * HJT

    Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    I believe I fixed the newfiles problem. I had overlooked the fixes to get it to run correctly. I could not find the C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MPS\mps.exe unless that first part is actually C:\PROGRAM FILES. Please forgive my ignorance if that is the case. I fixed the required items with HJT, Updated Ad-Aware and scanned, and saved new log files. My computer seems to be running a bit better now.

    Is it safe to assume I can remove Counterspy once all this is cleaned up? Coupled with McAffee, boot up is a bit slow. I would also like to get rid of McAffee, as I agree that it is a bit bloated. Which of the free virus scanners would you recommend from your lists?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Please attach the new log files.

    We will have you uninstall the tools when we are certain your system is clean.

    If McAfee is a paid version ...you may wish to keep it until it runs out. (Yes it is a resource hog).

    AVG is used by many, with good results.

    Your logs look clean.

    You may uninstall any programs that we asked you to download for the analysis.

    I would highly recommend that you immediately update your system with needed securtiy updates as well as service pack 2.
