What is the difference between AdAware SE and AdAware 2007?

  2. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

2007 replaces SE. The new features are listed here http://majorgeeks.com/download506.html

If you already have SE installed and choose to download 2007, the installation will allow you to auto uninstall SE if you wish.

    >> What is the difference between AdAware SE and AdAware 2007? <<

Ad-Aware SE "Personal" was the forerunner to Ad-Aware 2007 although currently there is a version available called Ad-Aware SE "Enterprise" edition which is the business-employee oriented version (Minimum order quantity 10)

For an easy-to-view comparison chart see:

    Good Luck!

Wow, yah, it's bloated, lol. Lots of extras on there that are far from my comprehension, lol.
Should I go back to AdAware SE, or am I better off with the updated AdAware 2007?

A friend has the AdAware 2007 installed on their new computer using Vista. Should they download AdAware SE instead?

  6. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

    Yes, it is fully bloated.

BUT...the good news :) If you are running the Free version and have no plans to upgrade to the Plus or Pro versions, you can remove the bloatware using the following procedure. If you change your mind at any point and do want to upgrade, or Lavasoft at some future point make it necessary to have any of these files to update definitions, you can simply uninstall and reinstall it. This will work great for Vista users who want to run this but had isues with SE and yet don't want the bloatware. I have tested this on XP - works great. Will also test it on Vista tomorrow.

Make a new restore point before beginning!

    1. Install Ad-Aware 2007 FREE.

    2. Run Ad-Aware 2007 FREE after installation.

    3. When you get the dialog panel with the drop-down menu list
of all the different licensed versions of Ad-Aware 2007
that you have to pay for, click the CANCEL button. As of
version 7.0.1.4, the Lavasoft people do not tell you in the
installation that there is a free version - but clicking the
CANCEL button at this point will give you the
Ad-Aware 2007 FREE version that you were expecting.

    4. Update Ad-Aware 2007 and then exit from Ad-Aware 2007.

    5. Go to the directory
    C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\

    6. Delete the following files:

    Ad-Watch2007.exe
    AWProcessWatch.dll
    AWRegWatchDLL.dll
    CookieBlocker.dll
    HostFileEditor.exe
    ProcessWatch.dll
    ProcessWatch.exe

As far as I could tell, you don't need those files at all
if you only want Ad-Aware 2007 FREE as of version 7.0.1.4.

(NOTE: If you plan to upgrade from Ad-Aware 2007 FREE to
    Ad-Aware 2007 PLUS or Ad-Aware 2007 PRO, then don't delete
these files - or otherwise reinstall Ad-Aware 2007 if you
want to get all these files back so that you can upgrade
    to Ad-Aware 2007 PLUS or Ad-Aware 2007 PRO.)

    7. Click START, RUN and type SERVICES.MSC in the RUN dialog.

    8. Right-Click the Ad-Aware 2007 service in the services list.

    9. Click Properties.

    10. Click the Start-up Type pull-down menu and select manual.

    11. Click the STOP button.

    12. Click OK and exit from the SERVICES console.

    13. Download PSTOOLS from Microsoft/Sysinternals from
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/pskill.mspx
(or search on google for PSKILL if this page is moved in the future).

    14. Extract PSKILL.exe and put it in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
(Note: You don't need to extract PDH.DLL because Windows XP
should already have a more recent version in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32)

    15. Make a batch file that you can name Ad-Aware2007.bat which
    has the following two lines:

    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\Ad-Aware2007.exe"
    pskill aawservice.exe

Be sure that you have the quotation marks in the first line.
And then save this batch file to the
    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\" directory.

    16. In your START menu, right-click on the "Ad-Aware 2007" menu item,
click Properties, and on the Shortcut tab, click "Change Icon"
and then click OK (doing this makes sure you keep the same icon),
and then you will need to change
    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\Ad-Aware2007.exe"
    to
    "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\Ad-Aware2007.bat"
where you are actually only changing the "exe" to "bat"
and also change "Normal" to "Minimized" to make the
DOS command window (that the batch file runs in) be hidden.

    17. Remove the other Lavasoft/Ad-Aware 2007 menu items (Ad-Watch, etc.)
    from the START menu.

    ENJOY a non-bloated Ad-Aware 2007 FREE!

My friend has installed AdAware 2007 on their new Vista computer. If they're not comfortable with the above procedure, is it ok if they uninstall the 2007, then install the AdAware SE?
Is AdAware SE compatible with their Vista? Thanks!

Lev, thanks so much for your hard work!

Thanks Lev. I was holding off installing 2007. I'll print out what you posted and attempt an install on one of the computers (all run 2K so I can report how it works there). I'll do a ghost before I start just in case I run into a snag.
On my oldest and slowest computer, I've replaced AdAware with SuperAntiSpyware which seems to work okay.

Ad-Aware SE works fine on my version of Vista Ultimate.

I'm sure you could uninstall 2007 if you didn;t like it and reinstall SE if you have the .exe download for it - not sure where it is online as a download now. MGs carries 2007 now.

If anyone needs more detail to make a batch file, just holler.

Wow, Lev, lots of info in your earlier post. :cool

As to bloatware, the only process running live from my Ad-Aware 2007, is aawservice.exe at less than 5Kb. ;) and NOT using any CPU cycles. :confused

The only problem I have with Ad-Aware 2007 is updating it. My mind is not around the process yet. I keep getting varying results, but that is only me. ;)

    >> What's that website called where you can grab old versions of programs? Kestrel13! <<

If you mean OldVersion.com this site has many earlier versions of programs. When clicking on the link for software at OldVersion.com, you may need to scroll down the resulting page to find the version you want.

Also, OldVersion.com isn't the only site that archives old software. If you're looking for any hard-to-find older or out-of-date applications, you could also try Oldapps.com as well as Old-versions.net.

    Good Luck!

Does anyone know if the updates still work for Adaware SE? I've been attempting to update but it keeps saying "error retrieving update" or something like that.:confused

    >> AdAware SE dropped automatic updates on Dec. 31, 2007. Your choices are: manual updates from lavasoft.com or remove and install AdAware 2007. plodr <<

You can also download the latest manual update for Ad-aware SE referencefile here at Major Geeks in the "Anti-Spyware Tools" section. ;)

Lavasoft, the makers of AdAware SE discontinued "automatic updates" on Dec. 31, 2007. However, you can click here to download the latest reference file for Ad-aware (which is available right here at MajorGeeks)

Once downloaded, simply unzip the contents of the zip file which is the newest definitions (the file is labeled "defs.ref") into your Ad-Aware folder, which is most likely located here "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\"

    Good Luck!

Just to note re Post #7, while the instruction given in the post work fine for Win XP, I found that setting the start type to Manual via services.msc in Vista caused an error and the app would not function. However, all other instructions worked great with Vista.
