what does he want to do with it? play modern games, store lots of music, edit video? that really changes what kind of computer to build

depends on which ones your compairing

The Best bang for your Buck Hands down will be the AMD
$600 budget go for AMD NF4 based MOBO, single core will get more for your money, but there are some good deals on some AMD dual core's

    An X2 3800 $152

    Single core a 3700 $102

MOBO I'd suggest Asus or DFI
you can get a Asus for $52 & up at newegg DFI probably $70 ish & up

I just checked my links they work fine for me, even on other PC's on my home network ( you can link to Newegg & seach your self)

You want link for fully built PC, I thought you said your friend or "he wants to build one" ??

Ive seen several off the shelf PCs at places like Best Buy within the $600 or so budget you mentioned.
Look for NF4 chipset, socket 939, 1gb min of memory ( something similar to whats in your Sig but I'd go bigger in the CPU MHz)

Seagate's making some great HDD with 5yr warranty (80gb SATA are around $50)
NEC 3550a is kick ass CD/DVD Multi format burner (aprox $30)
Get good Brand name PSU, native 24 pin main, that can provide around 33 +12v amps via a single +12v rail or a total of multiple +12v rails ( expect to pay $80 & up, one of the best avaible today is OCZ Gamestream 700 for $150 ish)

I agree with ASUS about Best Buy . . . I've purchased some computers there recently, and they had some pretty good deals - plus you get a warranty.

If your friend just wants a fully built one instead of building one, this is your ticket. Best Buy had some pretty good systems for around 700 bucks.

. . . of course, it is fun to build your own . . .

nono i mean like all the parts listed so he can put the comptuer together for 600 - 700 dollars.. if you look at my sig, thats my computer i built, people from here listed me all the parts for it so it would all work together and i bought em :).. that was like a year ago though :p
