Hey everyone. I hope this helps someone else in the future. I can't access amazon.com, and when I try to, a message comes up (in Firefox) that says: "Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked."

I deleted all my cookies and I'm pretty sure it's a wareout infection, I just need to know what files to remove from the HJT log. I'll post the log in my next post.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Yes you do have a WareOut infection.

Run this WareOut Removal and attach the log. The you really need to run the below so we can be sure you PC is free from this and any other malware.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

It does not look like you downloaded FixWareOut from my link! You seem to have run an older version! You should run the version I gave you.

Just a side note, when I did these steps under the wareout procedure:

    - Go into Control Panel -->Network Connections.
    - Right click on your connection
    - and click Properties.
    - On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
    - Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
    - Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
    - Click the ok button. The page will close.
    - Press ok on the page in front of you.
    - Restart the computer.

and then tried to connect to amazon.com, it worked fine! What could this mean?

I'm not sure what you are asking me! The purpose of that is to fix the problems that WareOut causes, thus that is what you would expect!

You still have malware problems! You need to follow the other steps I gave in message # 3.

I will, thank you again for your help, and I'll let you know if I run into any more snags along my cleaning process.

You're welcome. Make sure you install and rename HijackThis as requested in step 7 of the READ & RUN ME since you had it incorrectly installed in your previous log.

  12. Pennyman

    Pennyman Private E-2

Ok, I will. If I may ask, what is the purpose of obtaining DNS Server automatically? As opposed to otherwise? It wasn't selected to begin with, so I'm just curious what it does by selecting it.

Oh, BTW just for good measure, I renamed and moved HJT, ran a scan and here's the log, just in case you were curious ;)

You need to complete all the other steps before attaching a HijackThis log again. This means that once all other steps are finished and all the other 5 logs are attached, you must then get a new HJT log. Steps must be followed in the order written in the READ ME.

By the way, this C:\HijackThis(keep here) defeats the whole purpose of trying to renaming HijackThis so that malware cannot recognize it. It they look for the path where the process is being run from, they will recognize the name. That is why we suggested C:\Program Files\HJT\analyse.exe

Also looks like you did not do step 2 of the READ ME properly which resulted in your having HJT.exe.exe instead of HJT.exe

It allows your IP address to be assigned dynamically by your ISP or by your router....depending on how you connect to the internet. How do you connect (dial-up, cable, DSL)? Do you have a static IP address (this is not a normal configuration that an ISP would use)? If you changed to DHCP and everything is working, then all you were doing is fixing what the procedure was telling you to do to fix the problems that WareOut had caused.

I have DSL. I'm on a laptop on a network with my brother's laptop and the family's main desktop. As far as I know I have a static IP, but I can't be certain. So you're telling me that because let the selected "obtain DNS server automatically" I simply went around the problem instead of removing the malware itself? How will I find out what my IP address is (same internet protocol window) if I want to put it back the way it was?

BTW are you a software engineer by chance? Cause you really know your stuff!

I doubt it! Especially since you said you are on a network which would imply you have a router after your DSL modem (the router is inbetween your PCs and the DSL modem). Normal default setup would be to have DHCP enabled and not use static addressing.

No! That step is just part of the fix. The first part was to run FixWareOut and the second part was to fix the your DHCP setup to avoid having the hijacker send you to their DNS server. If you want to finish the fix, you need to finish doing what I gave you to days ago. You are just wasting time not completing the READ & RUN ME and run the risk of getting reinfected with this again. In additon you have other infections that need to be removed.

You don't need to put it back. If what you changed was not working properly, you would not be able to get connected to the internet right now. This means that if you set your PC to DHCP as requested in the fix, that is the way your network wants it to be.

I'm an Electrical Engineer! Software Engineers in reality don't know too much about stuff like this unless they specialize in PCs and networking. Most Software Engineers are too far removed from the hardware to really know how things really work.

Actually, my next guess was going to be EE, haha! I'm an ME myself, in my junior year at SJSU.

BTW, I just finished the BitDefender scan, so in a couple hours I will be posting all 6 reports.

Well good luck! I hope job prospects are good in CA. The engineering profession has taking a beating since 2000 and with out sourcing to low cost centers outside the USA, there are many thousands of engineers out of work and more loosing jobs all the time. (However, let me stop right now with this since it is not a topic for this forum!).

Just attach all the logs when you finish!

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Mozilla Firefox (1.0.7)
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ABCXYZ] teqq32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{0CDE919A-42A0-4401-8149-0C334F43F028}: NameServer = 85.255.113.106,85.255.112.111
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7F048DAE-E9B9-43A3-850C-29F084CEDFDC}: NameServer = 85.255.113.106,85.255.112.111
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.106 85.255.112.111
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{0CDE919A-42A0-4401-8149-0C334F43F028}: NameServer = 85.255.113.106,85.255.112.111
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.113.106 85.255.112.111

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\instw32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\teqq32.exe

    Now reboot in normal mode

    Now run Ccleaner

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Process went smoothly. Couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\system32\teqq32.exe in safemode, but caught the other one.

I insist on using my edition of Firefox for now. After upgrading to IE7 and hearing about and experiencing some bugs. I'll hold off on upgrading Firefox for the time being. The download page even mentioned some people had trouble with the new Firefox, so I'll wait.

Anyway, back on topic. The new files:

Using the old version of Firefox is a security risk, but it's your PC. You should at least attempt to find version 1.5.0.9 and upgrade to it if you are afraid of the release 2.x versions. I have used 1.5.0.9 and several dozen PCs without any problems, but then again I have also used version 2.0.0.1 on quite a few (about 8) PCs without incidence too.

Did you run the steps I gave you in the exact order written????? Are you sure?

    I see this
In your log from GetRunKey but it is not in your HJT log which would appear to indicate that you ran GetRunKey before doing the fix with HJT. You must run steps exactly as written. Even though it looks like you are running HJT twice (once to fix and then later to do a scan) this is necessary. If you did run them exactly as written then it may be necessary do some additional fixes. Let's see! Attach a new GetRunKey log now so I can be sure it is gone.

You also did not answer my question on how things are working.

Well that item is still there. Try this!

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now attach another new log from GetRunKey.

Also tell me if the C:\windows\system32\ABCXYZ.exe file actually exists. If so, delete it.

Well that could be because you never did step 2 in the READ AND RUN ME. I can tell you did not do step 2 based on your GetRunKey log. Actually I gave you a patch to correct this a few messages back which did fix it, but for some reason you undid the fixes. Not sure why!

Or it could be that the file is really gone.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
