After some random web surfing yesterday AVG started coming up with virus warnings. It found some files it couldn't quarantine c:\windows\assembly\GAC_32\desktop.ini and c:\windows\assembly\GAC_64\desktop.ini are currently the only two it continues to mention. This is after running Malwarebytes and cleaning in safe mode.

Searching for more answers I ran across this a blog post that suggested ways to get rid of those files. Attempting to access them I get an 'access denied' messages though. Further searching around I ran across some threads posted here, and now I hope you can help to ensure I clean up the rest of this mess. Attached are the requested logs.

Attached is the requested log from running frst64. While running this, I got a message box that multiple OS were on the system. However, I only know of and only got the option to select Windows 7 Home.

When I booted back into Windows normally, I got a message pop-up from AVG "Threat removal completed" for C:\windows\assembly\GAC_64\desktop.ini

Also, Malwarebytes detects rootkit.0access in c:\$recycle.bin.

Thank you for looking into this.

Your BITS service needs repairing and your firewall is broken. First we need to remove what malware exists.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

    Attached is fixlist.txt
    • Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.

    Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (How to attach)

    Now attempt to boot normally.

    -------------------------------

    • Now re-run RogueKiller - no fix just a scan and attach the log.
    • Re-run FRST - no fix, just a scan and attach the log.
    • Let me know how things are running at this point.

Ran the fix and scans without issue. RogueKiller reported a ROOT.MBR warning/error in the upper left portion of the window.

Haven't experienced any redirects while searching, although it doesn't happen constantly.

AVG detected a threat in c:\$recycle.bin\... upon booting, no action taken.
AVG also reported once again that it had taken care of the threat in c:\windows\assembly\GDC_64\desktop.ini.

Logs attached. Awaiting next instructions. Thank you.

Logs attached. It's in the logs, but SteelWerks WhoAmI stopped working, I got the pop up message, and had to wait until the close button appeared. Everything else ran without intervention.

    Hi GhanieLane,

What malware problems are you still experiencing?

Delete this folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\1ClickDownload

    __

[IMG] Open Notepad and copy everything in the code box below into it.
    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "DAEMON Tools Lite"=-
    • File -> Save As -> Save as type: "All Files" -> File Name: fixme.reg > Save.
Now merge this into the registry by double-clicking it.
Let me know if the merge was successful or not.

The merge was successful. Thanks for that.

I haven't been using my computer since I found out about the infection so I can't comment on performance. Is it safe to use now?

Not finding any other traces of malware in your logs. Go ahead and experiment with it and let me know how things are running.

Download these files to your desktop.

    BITS.reg
    MpsSvc.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the BITS.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry. Repeat this for the MpsSvc.reg file.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

OK, you are now ready for final steps. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
