Hello and let me say first; thank you volunteer for taking a look.

I got infected by something through accidently clicking "no" on something to do with not having the right flash update installed. Almost immediatley I unplugged and began cleaning. (firewall, antivirus turned off and a "xp security center scanner" popped up)

I think Im clean the only thing that bothers me is that Rootrepeal would not run. I ran it from desktop a couple of times but it did not seem to be going. So I started in Safemode and just let it run.

When I ran it there were no file paths popping up in the main window but below that (around the stop button) the file path had changed so I assumed it was doing something. The bottom status bar never changed from initialzing hidden/locked.

Well after 4 days and it was finally to windows/uninstall servicesomthing I decided to stop it (I still had a few more drives to go and didnt want to wait a few months)

Besides that I had forgotten to install java. I did that before my post though.

Thanks for all your help and I hope you are having a wonderful winter.

oh and the dates in the logs mglogs differ from the others because I had rootrepeal going for so long. It was in safemode without networking.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a file, folder, a dead BHO and to clear some symantec remains.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Destructo\Local Settings\Application Data\NLF6AMiFd8F

    Folder::
    c:\windows\msdownld.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
    c:\program files\Symantec
    c:\documents and settings\Destructo\Application Data\Symantec

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Now please tell me how your machine is behaving. :)

Wow, Thanks for the super quick reply. Either the forum is not busy or you're working overtime!

Anyway attached is my log. Machine seems to be in order. I only get the systemrestore avg warning which is taken care of in the last step.

Any alternative to rootrepeal when it doesnt run? Or is it more of a double check then a necessity?

Thank you so much for taking a look.

ps is there a combofix log scanner similar to the hijackthis scanners?

My apologies, I neglected to ask you to provide me with fresh logs from MGTools so let's do this and I can then confirm if you're clean.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

If we believe it's necessary to run another tool in it's place then we do and there are a few altenatives, yes.
    you're welcome.

No, afraid not. And I never ever trust hijackthis scanalysers... the only time I EVER used one myself was to just test out how accurate it was. The conclusion I came to was that if we were to fix whatever the scanalyser said was bad, in some instances you could end up causing damage to your machine. Nothing comes close to a carefully trained eye.

Delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

And how is your computer behaving now? I am not seeing any malware in your logs.

Excellent. :) Yes, final steps are due now, you did tell me in a previous post that all was okay, I was just trying to be thorough.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ok Im calling myself stupid and stressed out. I didnt put 2 and 2 together and got reinfected. Anyway it wasnt from clicking on anything it was going to a compromised site. xp guardian infection. I am now paying a bit more attention to the avg pause symbols. duh.

Heres the other idiot part: I actually hadnt restarted system restore so there are a few "other" probs then from the first time.

Ran sas and it called for restart. After that no exe would work. So I went to safemode admin. No network conn but the sas winsock fix did not work. Moved on to all the other scans. Root repeal wouldnt work again.

It wasnt until I was going to post that I remembered that I had not run sas with its updates so I did that again right before posting under the admin account. I posted both logs.

I looked around on the exe item and did find a fixexe.reg off of bleeping. (havent run it yet)

But nothing on the network connection repair.

On my main login nothing starts up.

Anyway, I feel like a total bonehead. Ill blame it on stressful times and overconfindence.
Thanks Kestrel for all your help (once again actually) and please feel free to roll your eyes. Im the one amongst my friends that usually fixes their computers. Doh!

Not seeing anything to do anyway. Scans dealt with the problem.

If the below bold folder is empty then please delete it by using windows explorer.

Now you can properly follow final steps once again. Safe surfing :)

lol, oh my. I can now at least laugh at myself. Alright:

Folder "vsosdk" has a vsoact file in it. So I didnt delete it.

Ran the fixexe.reg. Then messed with the network connect. Had to rebuild the IP stack to get it to finally work again.

Did the end steps. AND turned system restore back on. Well at least I was able to see differences in cleaning when xp guardian was active and when it was not? :p

The only thing wrong now is in the start menu. I can no longer right click and have a menu pop up. I looked for 30 min or so but really could not find a solution. Under safemode admin I could. Any thoughts?

Well Kestrel thank you so much for your help. I kind of figured about the new thread but fealt kind of stupid and knew that you'd probably get a laugh. Hopefully in the future I will never have to post about my own rig again.

    Thanks again
