To start, I apologize for how noob I'm about to sound:

Last night, I scanned my computer with Adaware SE Professional. It didn't find much - just 4 tracking cookies and then that MRU list (whatever that is). I let it automatically remove the files like I usually do. As soon as I was done, my internet connection messed up. My computer says I am connected, but I am unable to login in GAIM and unable to access any web pages in either IE or Firefox. It goes directly to "page not found." Msn messenger won't even attempt to login - I click the login button and it just does nothing.

A little info: I am on a cable modem service, and have two comupters (mine and my boyfriend's) connected to a router. His computer can access pages/messengers (I am posting from it now) but mine can't. I checked mine and all the DNS numbers and everything are still there. The weirdest thing is that his computer did this same exact thing two days ago, right after scanning, but he never found a way to fix it and had to reformat. I don't want it to come to that for me, if at all possible.

Specs: My comp is no name brand, I had it made for me. Running WinXP, 256 Ram, 55Gb harddrive and I believe it's 1.2Ghz. I hope I put all that in right.

Any ideas what I should do to fix this?

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • HijackThis
Do what you can of the instructions, if need be download the tools in the tutorial from another computer and install them on the computer that is having problems. IF you do not have the Internet in Sfe Mode w/ Networking then skip the online scans.

It is very important that you tell us what you could not accomplish, and any error messages that you may have recieved.
