Computer wont boor after new harddrive

My friends computer wont boot, so i gave him a new harddrive and that wont boot either..

it says that the hard drive does not have a fat 32 or fat 16 file system and that it either has ntfs or hpfs but you said that your mom had windows xp so it has to be ntfs so that means i have to set up a ms-dos boot partition or some shit but i dont have a floppy and i dont even no if thats the problem
