winsrv.dll BSOD

I'm running WinXP Pro (SP1) and just started getting an infinite boot loop with a BSOD. I can start up and it gets to the Windows loading logo, then turns black, then flashes a quick BSOD that mentions not being able to load because winsrv.dll is missing. Prior to this, I was simply uninstalling an nVIdia driver (through the Uninstall panel, like I've done a billion times before) and restarting to load the new one. Now I get the BSOD whether I try and boot up normally, in Safe Mode, or even Last Known Working Configuration.

I've done research on this and it seems related to SP2, but I've never installed SP2 on this machine. There was also talk of certain adware causing problems, but again I can't login to check. I've tried going through the recovery console copying winsrv.dll from my XP disc and a copy from another computer (copied its winsrv.dll to disc and then tried putting it on mine) but still get the BSOD.

I've also tried booting from the XP disc as if to do a repair install (Enter, then Repair rather than going through recovery console) but it copies 1% of the file, then gets to a few that it can't seem to copy. So it looks like my install disc might also be having problems. (Great time to do that, disc.)

Any suggestions? Like I said I've copied over at least two new replacement versions of winsrv.dll and the problem persists, so I'm somewhat at a loss...

Try your XP disk in another drive, maybe ya CD drive having trouble's reading the disk?
Borrow a friend disk & try.

Yeah, I'm going to try and bring an XP disc home from work and give that a shot. I think I tried putting the disc in the second CD drive *after* boting up from the first drive and it didn't work, but maybe that's just because it didn't like me trying to read from the second drive.

In any case, I'll try to repair my install again tonight and post results. If anyone else has ideas in the meantime, I'm all ears. What I find especially odd is that I even tried replacing the file it was choking on (winsrv.dll) twice and yet it still couldn't boot through.

And all this just because of a driver uninstall. =\ (Well, that's what it seems like anyway.)

Hah, go figure... Like I said before, I was booting from the XP CD in drive E: and then, when it got hung up on the files, tried switching to F: and continuing. That wasn't working, so I assumed the worst. Tonight I did what you suggested and booted from F: (my other CD drive) from start to finish and here I am. :) The repair install went flawlessly and I've got everything tentatively back to normal now. I'm keeping a wary eye on everything but so far so good...
