I've done my search on the boards and found advice on both the 'software' board and the 'spyware' board.

Looking for advice on whether I should assume problem is caused by malware - if so I'll go through the steps as posted in the spyware sticky. If not, then I'll go through the steps posted by 'kadavill' on the 'software board' (to go through add-ons and disable)

    My specifics:

Running Windows XP SP2 (let me know if you need more system info)

    Error message:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Runtime Error!

    Program: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application’s support team for more information.

(other 'users' on this desktop can launch IE, just not mine)

    Thanks for your help,

    Emily

If you think the problem could be malware related, follow the steps below and we will find out.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I've done everything asked for in the 'sticky' note, I had no issues running the scans, and found no problems (a few things found with spybot, but nothing that couldn't be removed). Virus scans all came back clean.

I can't run HJT in Normal mode from my (admin) XP User log on. Due to the problem in my original post, I can't open windows explorer to get to the .exe to install HJT. I can however still run IE and windows explorer from the other IDs on the computer (which is how I could get to the servers to download the software apps), but I doubted that that would provide a correct log.

    Waiting for further instructions.

If you cannot install HJT which is in a ZIP file not an EXE file), how did you install and run all the other programs in the READ ME FIRST.

You do not need to run Windows Explorer to get to HijackThis.exe either. If you know exactly where it is installed you can run it from Start, Run, enter c:\program files\hjt\hijackthis.exe and then click OK. (obviously you must have the exe at c:\program files\hjt\hijackthis.exe for this to work but it will run from anywhere you have it)

I can run windows explorer in safe mode, which is how i ran the other scans.

ok, i'll do what you say about using start/run - i hadn't had to do that in a LONG time - i guess i've become windows explorer dependent!

    thanks.

If you still can not run HJT from normal boot, post a log from safe boot mode so we can try to get started.

I do not see any real major issues in your log. Just some minor things to fix below. I do not believe that you iexplore problems are related to malware. This may be more of a topic for the Software Forum. You should do the stuff below anyway just to be safe. Also I would recommend running the below command from either the command prompt or from a Start, Run box.

    sfc /scannow

Did you knowingly install the below items for CrazyTalk?

Is the below R0 Start Page valid?
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.jokersupdates.com/

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.
