    Hi

Good is an emotive word as not all antivirus applications are good, it all depends on how you surf the internet, if you download warez as in music, flim and porn then you are open to malware and no security software is going to save you as you gave the malware access.

Now if you are thinking protective then you are asking an open question as most techs have differing replies as to there own preference, so security software is really testing a few and seeing what you can live with GUI wise as update wise.

    Me well:
    Windows 8.1 Firewall
    Windows Defender
    Superantispyware

    For extra scans if needed
    Malwarebytes (awesome app)

But onus is really on how you surf if you safe surf then you should be fine but if you go after that celeb porn video or pics, free music and films then you are open to malware.

I've had very good luck with Avast for antivirus, and using Spyware blaster to harden my browser. I do regular scans with Malwarebytes - DavidGP is right, it's an awesome app.

I've been testing Panda Cloud Antivirus for several months. So far no complaints. It is nice for PC's with limited resources as it is cloud based. Very small footprint on your computer. Not ready to give it a whole-hearted thumbs up yet myself, but it seems popular. Like DavidGP said, a lot depends on how you surf. If you frequent risky sites then no anti net-nasty software is going to be effective.

Some quick advice for anyone surfing the jungle that is the internet:

If something suddenly pops up on your screen you didn't expect, do not click anywhere in the pop-up. Open your task manager and kill it from there. Problem with malware pop-ups is anywhere you click is saying "Yes, install this crap on my computer, please."

Also, keep regularly updated backups of your entire system (there are free programs here that can do that for you) in the event of a complete system crash.

Doesn't hurt to keep regular system restore points either, and learn how to start system restore from a command prompt.

If you need help with any of this just shout. :)
