Wireles Connection Not Working

I never realised how important the internet was to me until....my notebook (see below) would not connect. Here's the problem:

The connection symbol in the system tray shows 'not connected - no networks'. The symbol has a red cross through it, not, as occasionaly happens when the internet connection is temporarily lost, a yellow circle. So (I think) my notebook is not seeing my modem/router or detecting even the carrier. It worked on Wednesday (9) last, but not Thurdsay (10). in between that time I tried a system restore which failed due to an "unspecified error" (in an effort to solve another problem: desktop and taskbar icons were messed up).

The wireless device (transceiver) in the notebook shows up in Device Manager, so that has not become disconnected. A Dell laptop was able to connect wirelessly to the internet without any problems, so my router/modem is working properly.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do about this, it feels like my life has come to sudden end, I might have to something something useful ! Please, please help !

We'd better take a look at your network state. Type cmd in Start > Search and click on cmd.exe above. Type ipconfig /all (note the space) and in the cmd window right click > Select All. In your next post use Paste (Ctrl V).

Thank you for answering, Earthling. Hope you or someone can figure out how to rectify this issue.

Here they are, seen from notebook (connection problem)
follwed by the same network seen over a wired connection from the same router/router modem by a different computer (set up unchanged from the configution which woked in the past)

Thanks for that. First, let's check whether your laptop's wireless adapter has somehow been disabled. Open Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings and see if the wireless adapter says 'Disabled'. If it does try right clicking it > Enable. If it's not disabled try Connect. Let us know what happens.

Thanks for your help so far Earhling.
I've had go away for a few days...back now to face the problem now though.

Trying what you outlined (procedure in detail is slightly different), the system told me that my network adapter was enabled, but on trying to connect I got the message "no nework connections are available" (connection symbol still is with a red cross through it). I tried disabling the network adapter and re-enabling it again, but this changed nothing. (several of the items in drop-down box had the blue and yellow shield next to them)

I am using the same Dlink router/modem to connect to MG right now, as described in my earlier messages (wired ethernet).

Is your router permanently on or do you shut it down each night? If it's permanently on try powering off, leave for 15 secs and rebooting it. Hard reboot notebook and see if it can see it.

If you shut it down each night then forget that and try System restore again to 9 July or earlier. If that again fails to complete it would start to look like some problem with Windows. Run chkdsk /r and then sfc /scannow.

My router/modem is normally on 24/7

I have just tried (again !) turning off the laptop, turning off the router for 60a, turning the router/modem back on for 60s, finally turning on the laptop and leaving for 5 minutes. Still no connections are seen.

System Restore (to solve another still-unresolved problem) twice previously to 21 the 28 June 2014 failed. I am attempting to restore to system-created restore point 7.July.2014...system restore initialising...shutting down...starting windows...logging in...oh dear...(see attached picture, screen shot from laptop - this what happened on previous sys restors)...but I I do have skype back, and an internet connection ...now to work on the other problems. Thanks Earthling, keep looking please for more posts that I will making for other issues in the near future.

Should I open a new thread for 'System Restore doesn't work' ? :-D

Well, not too sure how but at least the main problem appears to have been cracked. I still advise running chkdsk and sfc before doing any more, and I would follow that with at least two AV/malware scans before pursuing the remaining issues. When running sfc you may possibly be asked to insert your system disk, which has to be a Microsoft installation disk rather than an OEM disk. If you don't have one you may not be able to complete sfc but do try.

ok, I was thinking of running sfc, I've never used it before. Being an HP this notebook came with the OS preinstalled, so I have no original disks whatsoever.

I have already performed a Windows Update, and started AVG scanning for malware; I planned to follow that with msert.

    I will also run chkdsk.

I will post some of the results.

As promised, the full sp :

Neither AVG nor msert found any evidence of malware (but I realize that this doesn't mean there none present on my computer)

rI an chkdsk /r by typing it into the search box, right-clicking on "chkdsk /r" when it appeared in the results above, and then clicking on "run as administrator".

CMD window opened, and it ran

It said results would not be written to disk as /f not specified...I thought /f was included in /r ? maybe not in CMD of Windows 7.

seemed to be ok, took about 1 min, very quick near the end, and the cmd window closed before I could read the results.

Later, I found out the way to view this info was viewable in the event viewer (under Admin tools in CP)

[ Chkdsk was executed in read-only mode on a volume snapshot.

I assume this means everything is OK.

However, doing this does seem to have fixed the "scrambled icons" problem (icons mis-labeled on dsktop and in taskbar, eg hp dock icon belonged to 'open IE' command).

running "sfc /scannow" (type in search box under Start, r-click, delect run as admin), flashes something up at the screen, apparently does nothing. I have found out now how to do this while retaining the CMD window open. I did not need an installation disk, it seems, nor any password etc. This is the result:

    "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
    example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

    C:\Windows\system32> "

Again, I assume that I do not need to do anything further.

In the wikipedia article on chkdsk, it says "In Windows Vista or Windows 7, CHKDSK's output will be piped to the App Event Log found in "bootex.log" in the root folder of the drive." - I have tried to find it, but was unable to. (I had hoped that the results of chkdsk /r would be there) [but see amended text above]

You need to run both chkdsk and sfc from an elevated command prompt rather than from Search. Then it will require a reboot, run in Read/Write mode rather than Read only, fix your problems, and you get to see the results. I would run them both again.

But we seem to have Lady Luck on our side with this. A failed System Restore actually restored your internet connection and a chkdsk in read mode fixed your scrambled icons! :confused

  14. Dumb_Question

    Dumb_Question Sergeant Major

I thought I already did this but I ran them both again, (search for CMD under Start, r-click CMD at the top of the list that appears, select 'Run as Admin') choosing run at boot up for chkdsk (or whatever that option was). I have the CMD screen showing these, chkdsk didn't run at this time, but later after I restarted. I remember chkdsk saying it had written corrections or something, and later that the "the volume was clean" (on a new screen).

    - I restarted, and chkdsk ran again, taking rather longer this time.

I don't understand what you're you are describing here - read/write mode ? do you get a choice ? I didn't fix anything, I just let it run to the end. Where do / how do I get to see the chkdsk results ?

Look at the first line of the section you highlighted in blue in #12
Wish I could answer that. If any one does know then please enlighten us!

The point is you have run chkdsk as it should be run and it has found errors and corrected them. That is all we wanted. I would still say run sfc the same way, as after that hopefully your system will be running normally, no remaining issues.

I see that CHKDSK was run in read only mode. Also, that to achieve corrections, I should have used the /f option. I assume that this is another way of executing CHKDSK so that it makes the corrections in the same way as restarting. What I did not understand was how to run "sfc /scannow" in the analogous fashion as CHKDSK. It just ran as before, this time finding nothing as the corrupt files were successfully repaired last time I ran it (second section of blue text in post 12).
Anyway, here's what I did before rebooting, it's the text from the CMD window run as Administrator.
