    Hi All,

I am accustomed to Windows XP & using Black Viper's Tweaking Guide, but must run Windows ME on this PC. Can anyone recommend something similiar to disable services?

    Heartfelt thanks in advance,
    Gina

The concept of services is not something which exists in Win9x/WinMe. Instead it is called background applications (Though they also exists in the WinNT world along with services).

Background application are programs that are usually automaticly launched at Windows Start. Programs like MSConfig(Microsoft Own) or StartUp CPL (Recommended) can be used to configure background applications.

WinMe has 3 major builtin background applications (Besides the ones installed by all your 3rd party applications):

    1. System Restore (StateMgr.exe) (Similar to System Restore in WinXP)
    2. System File Protection (StateMgr.exe) (Similar to Windows File Protection in WinXP)
    3. Application Logging (Taskmon.exe) (Similar to the Prefetcher in WinXP)

Thanks for the info, snakefoot. I already use StartUp CPL (the one I downloaded here at MG) & got some great advice from wisewiz on system restore. I am attaching a snapshot of my StartUp CPL "all user services," let me know if you see anything I don't need.

BTW, most of these services are Norton AV... I think.

    Thanks!

    Dont need scanregw.exe, taskmon.exe

hpsysdrv.exe is loading your printer, probably in tray. If you dont use your printer a lot, you can live without it.

Uninstall Nortons sometime and you can install AVG for free. Less registry entries and cpu usage and startup items. You think Nortons put a lot of startup items in, wait until you see the registry entries and folders :)

    Thanks Major Attitude! :D

As far as the Norton thing....
    1) My husband actually purchased it at retail  so I wanted to get my money's worth. (We had to have an up-to-date Antivirus CD this past summer because I was having all sorts of problems, thought it might be a virus, & booted/scanned from the CD. I think you were one of the members who helped me with the reformatting back then...)

    2) I've been using it for years, so I know the application & the "how-to's" very well.

    3) I wrote to Black Viper about this (http://www.blackviper.com/ before I joined Major Geeks & he told me that he had never been able to successfully uninstall Norton or McAfee AV BECAUSE of all those registry entries you spoke of. (So I didn't think it possible... I could reformat, I guess? Would it be neccessary? I even tried the removal tool, but STILL had registration entries.) Have you had success uninstalling Norton AV? I think I could stomach losing the out-of-pocket expense for a happier PC. Black Viper also recommended AVG if I could completely uninstall Norton AV.

Based on the points above, let me know if you think it would be worth it to uninstall. (I also have Norton Utilities but only use the WinDoctor feature. I think I have successfully disabled it UNTIL I run it, but are any of those start-up items from NU?) I am also using RegCleaner 4.3 build 780.

    Thanks again!

PS: My printer is a scanner too, so I use it frequently. Sorry about the lengthy post, but I thought MORE information would be better than none. Any/all advice will be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't scanregw.exe the little program that backs up the registry (and then unloads from mem) every time you boot 9x/me? You might want to leave it in there...

For uninstalling NAV, try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3077.html

what alanc said. Yes, its worth it to uninstall. Nortons anything should be avoided, there are countless posts here that show people have nothing but troubles with their products.

    Thanks alanc, MA! :D

I've been "away from my PC" for a few days so I am just now reading this. Scanregw.exe re-enabled. :) In one of my earlier posts (way back in July) someone gave me a link for an alternative to WinDoctor (the only part of Norton Utilities I use.) I can search for it in my posts, but I believe the name of the program was JVC Power Tools. Am I correct it's ability to replace NU?

Peace & heartfelt thanks in advance,

Thanks alanc, you were right. I just downloaded the jv16 power tools and the removal file for Norton. (Will RegSupreme delete all the registry entries the removal file cannot reach?)

Hopefully I'll have a happier, healthier PC now, & thanks to everyone who helped me!

    Peace,

    You're welcome

Run RegSupreme *after* you completely uninstall Norton. It should get rid of any dead entries that are left over.

I have many questions, & I hope you don't mind answering.... I currently have RegCleaner 4.3 by Jouni Vourio. What are the benefits of using RegSupreme over RegCleaner? Have you used both? I am assuming that RegSupreme is included with the paid version of jv16 power tools? (If so, it is a bargain for $29.95!) I am VERY impressed with RegCleaner, & would not want to stop using it unless RegSupreme is similiar in performance.

    Thanks again,
    Gina
    :D

PS: alanc, I just read more about the jv16 power tools AND the RegSupreme & now know that they are separate products. It won't hurt to DL the demo of RegSupreme and check it out!

As far as I know RegSupreme is a standalone product at $12.95 and is not included in jv16 power tools. Shame really, I'd buy the whole package otherwise

But RegSupreme WILL be part of the next version of jv16PowerTools.

I don't yet know how pricing is going to work for current owners of the latest jv16PT who don't own RS, and current owners of RS who don't own the latest jv16.

Jouni V drops by this forum sometimes, and is a member. Perhaps he'll post an update on pricing for us when he knows. jv, you out there?

I use them both but for different reasons. RegCleaner has different ways to show you what's in there, whereas RegSupreme excels at removing useless or dead entries. I used RegCleaner and RegScrubXP regularly, but the first time I ran RegSupreme (in deep mode) it found over 300 dead entries that the others missed. Well worth the $13, imho ;)
