I cannot find a way to remove Startup Control Panel. I downloaded it at www.mlin.net. Does anyone know how to remove it? Thanks

If it's not listed under "add/remove", look where it's listed in the programs and see if it has it's own uninstaller.

It's not in add/remove or programs. It installs in control panel and there is no uninstaller. Thanks for the advice.

Doesn't it have a .cpl file in System32? If so, I think I'd just move that to a storage folder (with the Control Panel closed, of course), then open Control Panel and make sure that all's well and the Startup item isn't there, and then close CP and dump the file.

    Oughta do it.

Oh, then run your registry cleaner and look for any reference to Startup CPL.

Thanks for the advice, but I have no idea how to find a .cpl file in System32. Maybe you could explain this to me.

    thanks

OK. Hmmm. You using Windows XP? Click the Start button, go up and clcik Programs or All Programs, slide over into the long menu that appears and slide down until you see Windows Explorer. Click that.

Use the scrollbar until you can see the Windows folder. Click that twice. Use the scrollbar until you can see the System32 folder. Click that twice.

Now go to the top of the window and click the magnifying glass for Search. In the blank with the blinking cursor, type *.cpl (that's asterisk-dot-cpl), and click the Search Now button.

The search should run in the System32 folder and you should get a list of about twelve to fifteen or so files, all with names followed by .cpl (like access.cpl).

Type a list of those .cpl files (if you see some twice in the list, we only need the names once) and post that list here. Close the Explorer window by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Well tell you how to delete the file when we see your list -- if we can identify the Startup.CPL file, that is.

Same instructions, but go to the Windows folder first, then the System folder inside that, (not System32)...

AND look and see whether you can find a file called Startup.cpl (the list of files begins below the list of folders, and is alphabetical).

Let me know if you can find it.

OK, you must have downloaded the executable file version, instead of the Control Panel version, so go back to the Start button, clcik that and click Search (or Find), and type in Startup.exe, clcik Search, then come back and tell me what it finds.

    Another approach:

Where do you see the program? I mean, when you downloaded it, where did it go on your computer? Can you find it?

Did you ever run it, or didn't you know how to UNZIP it to run it?

Can you find the program for me now and tell me where you found it?

Is there an icon for Startup.cpl on your desktop, with all the other icons?

    C:\Program Files\Encompass 24KB Application 11/19/97

    I don't think that's it.

It's in the control panel. Yes there is a icon on the desk top and I have run the program.

Well, first, right-click on the Startup.cpl icon on your desktop, and on the popup menu, click Delete.

Then open the Control panel (Start, Settings, Control Panel) and make sure you can see Satartup CPL in the list there. Then look for Add and Remove Programs in that same list. Click that and see whether Startup CPL shows up in the list of programs in the Add & Remove Programs window. If you could see it when you opened the Control Panel, you should be able to click Add and Remove Programs and see an icon for it in there.

If you CAN see the icon for Startup CPL in the Add-Remove Programs list, go down to your taskbar and click the button that says Control Panle on it, then when you see the open Control Panel window, clcik the X in the upper right corner. Now the Add-Remove window is the only one open. Click Startup CPL, and clcik the button over on the right that says something like Add/Remove. Click Yes or OK. It should remove the program.

    what happened?

(You have to go away from this forum for a minute and then come back, to see the changes and the new posts. If you just watch the screen, you won't see the changes.)

It's not in add/remove. I went to the forum on the Startup CPL website (www.mlin.net) and no one knows how to remove it. Plenty of people want to remove it. The author won't answer any emails.
    Thanks for trying.

This is taken verbatim from Mike Lin's website:

    Uninstalling

Control Panel Applet: Use the Add/Remove Programs control panel -OR- delete Startup.cpl from your windows system directory. In either case Control Panel can't be open (If you are using Add/Remove programs, close the Control Panel window before hitting Add/Remove).

    EXE Version: Delete the EXE.

No problem. It was, however, just a different way of saying what Wisewiz had already suggested...;)

Thanks for the wave, Alan. Sometimes the same thing has to be said two ways (or seventy-eleven) to be effective.
