How do I use online scans when I can't get online?

Hi all, Linda, here, trying to get Roger's computer running again. I am in the process of downloading all the tools recommended in the 'do this first' posts. Reading ahead I see that instructions say to scan online at Trend Micro and Symantec. Is there any way to do that when we can't successfully access most web pages with his computer? If not, I assume I skip this step? Also, it says you only have to do step 2 if you have the about:blank or home search hijacks. How do I know if we have those? Thanks in advance!

See if you can get to them first. You must use IE. If you cannot do it in safe mode, try normal boot mode. If you cannot get there at all, just skip it, continue and tell us later.

Are you using a router to access the internet? If so, what kind?

Thanks, Dr. C. We are on dial up, no router. I went through all the steps recommended last night, every tool, etc. Just now I ran hijackthis and have a log file ready to send you. Thanks again! Linda

If you still have a problem, post your log but make sure the below guidelines have been followed.

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT
