Hello. I was recommended to your forums by a friend and was hoping that you could assist me. Sorry if I'm overdetailed, I figured every bit couldn't hurt.

About last night, I was surfing the web when I noticed I had a Malware Defense icon in my task bar and fake virus alerts were popping up (spelling Download as Donwload gave it away instantly). I deleted the program and thought nothing of it until the next morning. When I tried to log onto my computer, only my background would show up: the task manager wouldn't run, I couldn't click on anything, nothing.

Started the computer in Safe Mode, worked fine. Tried a System Restore and got as far as selected a Restore point when the Next button stopped working. Did a little looking around on a family laptop to discover that the same thing was happening to others due to the "Antivirus PC 2009" malware. Now, after some miracle, the computer can run outside of Safe Mode and there are no more Malware Defense pop-ups but I suspect the malware is still on the computer.

I have been able to install the MalwareBytes program (after many reroutes due to the infestation) but not run/update it. I have downloaded or attempted to download all of the programs/tools you suggest in your guide but due to the malware infection, some of them are giving me issues. If you could let me know which logs you'll need to see, I can post them back to you or inform you if the program will not work for me. I have attempted to purge my computer of all P2P programs that may be the root of my problem (and after this mess, will definitely not be using them again).

Thanks for your time and I hope we can get this fixed soon!

You have to tell me which of the downloads are giving you issues.
We want the following logs attached:
    SAS
    MBAM
    RootRepeal
    ComboFix
    C:\MGLogs.zip

And then you need to tell us what errors or problems you have with running any of them.

Attached are the logs from C:\MGLogs.zip (or H:\ as it were, the drive letter changed when I installed my new hard drive) and RootRepeal that I was able to run.

SAS gives an "encountered a problem and needs to close" error whenever I try to run it from where it is saved, ComboFix refuses to launch when opened, and MBAM will install on the computer after being renamed to mb.exe and is visible as running in the Task Manager after being clicked, but nothing on screen shows that it has launched and I am unable to do anything with it.

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    H:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTevppjyivlv.dat
    H:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTmogdnmnkcj.dll
    H:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTvheryeoqlx.dll
    H:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTytdtkaoutd.dll
    H:\WINDOWS\Temp\H8SRT1fc2.tmp
    H:\WINDOWS\Temp\H8SRT83b1.tmp
    H:\WINDOWS\Temp\H8SRT8816.tmp
    H:\WINDOWS\Temp\H8SRT8caa.tmp
    H:\WINDOWS\Temp\H8SRTf01c.tmp
    H:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\H8SRTdsbirxmydc.sys
    H:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\h8srtmainqt.dll
    H:\Documents and Settings\Harley\Local Settings\Temp\fla377.tmp
    H:\Documents and Settings\Harley\Local Settings\Temp\H8SRT9ee.tmp
    H:\Documents and Settings\Harley\Local Settings\Temp\h8srtmainqt.dll
    H:\Documents and Settings\Harley\Local Settings\Temp\fla380.tmp
    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

After reboot, download/install/update and run the scanning tools you couldn't run!

This includes MGTools as the log you attached was virtually empty.

That worked! Here are the logs from the run programs. Hopefully they bear more information this time around.

Please put ComboFix directly on your desktop, not here:
    h:\documents and settings\Harley\My Documents\ComboFix.exe

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Use windows explorer to see if this still exists ( delete it if it does!!):
    h:\windows\system32\krl32mainweq.dll

If you can not locate it, then you are clean. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
