i was shocked -- SHOCKED! -- to learn today that KFC has all-you-can-eat buffets in 33 states! i had never seen nor heard of this, much less witnessed one.

a bit of googlng reveals McD's had a breakfast buffet in a number of locations up through the 90s. it is unclear whether any of them continue to this day, but one lone branch in Nebraska (plus a few in MALAYSIA, of all places) seem to have a full-on lunch/dinner buffet. at McD's!!

wendy's, taco bell, burger king, etc. all coming up in searches, but wading through the forums is a tough slog. i put it to the good folks here: has anyone experienced a buffet at any of the major FAST-FOOD chains?!

(pls no golden coral, cicis, pizza hut, etc....buffets there are a given)

I recall going to a KFC Buffet some years ago on a trip. I think it was in Kentucky or Tennessee. I've never seen one here in Minnesota at ANY Fast Food Chain but then I only eat fast-food about twice a year.

We used to do the one at Wendy's for a while in the late 80's and early 90's. I don't remember it having much in the way of actual food, though...I think it was just a salad bar.

oh yeah, salad bar doesn't really count. as a quick hijack, tho, i'll just mention that at certain wendy's abroad it was a "one-pass" system, not "all you can eat". as a result, you should have SEEN the people trying to cram food on the plate!

i'd often see teams of college students order one lone salad, then build towering monstrosities worthy of tycho. "cross-beam [carrot] there!", "support column [celery] over here!", "layer of spackle [mashed potato] across the top!!"

the key was to bevel the shape OUTWARDS so that upper layers actually got wider. good engineering project.

then they'd split it 15-way! great fun.

    [/end hijack]

I personally make sure to Not go anywhere that has an all you can eat buffet. :puke

I can not understand the appeal of watching people feel the need to pile their plates so high and totally pig out. There can't be much nastier than that.

But then I don't even like 'Family Style' restaurants. Any display of massive amounts of food turns my stomach.

I've never seen them at any of our fast food places.

Just because it says all you can eat, it doesn't mean it has to be all at one sitting.
Get a conservative amount and pace yourself.
Nothing wrong about 2-3 trips if you don't over-do it.

I know that they've had KFC all-you-can-eat buffet at least since the eighties, down-under. Not a food type I'd really enjoy pigging out on, though. The kids used to like the popcorn chicken and ice creams and crud. Can't abide that kind of food, myself. Give me home cookin' any day.;)
Sizzlers, some Chinese joints and a few others also do that over here.

We live in probably the poorest town (Marion) in one of the poorest counties (Marion) in one of the poorest states (South Carolina) in America - on Wednesdays and Fridays, a local Burger King (family owned and operated!) gives away the breakfast items that are left over during the transition between the breakfast and lunch menus...

Some of the less fortunate (if not homeless) folk I've seen there on those days might not get "all they can eat", but it's probably close...

I used to be a co-owner of a Mcd's in the inner-city area, (yeah, yeah, laugh away, but the money was good. rolleyes). Legally, (according to franchise terms and conditions), any food over 10 mins old has to be thrown away. The burgers and salad and stuff is worked out by Dietitians. We even supplied food to the major children's hospital. (Obviously, not the thick shakes and crap, but the main meals). ~ Now you know why I am generally sick of fast-food.rolleyes

    to Caliban:

In regards to your closing statement in your last post, it is probably ALL some of them eat each day.
Sad when you see someone "dumpster-diving" for something to eat.
And yes, I have seen that. Far too many times.

ok, i'm sorry for having started this hijack-palooza, but does anyone have any more insights on actual fast-food buffets?

a bit of googling reveals that that "lone" McD's buffet in NE i mentioned is a breakfast buffet, same as the others. it does appear to be the only one still going, though.

would rly love to find a BK buffet...not sure they even exist; chain is deceptively using the term for the condiments station:

oddly enough, JAPAN actually comes closer, with an occasional "free refills" promotion for the burgers themselves:

i think i could get 3 down in 30 mins. 4 might be a challenge.

My main issue with buffets is the quality of the food typically sucks (Ryan's, Golden Corral). Anything called "steak" usually is tough enough to use as shoe leather, and the food sits out for hours at a time. Even if it's safe to eat (by health dept. standards), its taste is far from appetizing.

In Houston, Hartz has an all you can eat chicken buffet. Since they let you go to the counter and request fresh chicken (instead of what's been sitting under the heat lamp since who knows when), it's worth it.

The absolute best buffet I've ever been to is at the Grand Casino in Biloxi. Granted, it's about $25/person for dinner - but when you taste the prime rib and fresh baked desserts, it's worth every penny.

I thought this post read "Fast-food Bullets":-D:-D. That's the way it came out anyway, so to speak.

The Ky Fried chicken in my city has (or at least had - not been there in a while) a buffet. It was ok. Not much in the way of chicken at any given time - more of a salad bar then anything. But as such things go better then some, I guess. Don't eat much fast food anymore . . . wife watches me like a hawk!

Here in Brugge Belgium Pizza Hut does an all you can eat midday meal, it costs $10 and is really good value when you think that a take out pizza costs anything from $18 to $25.

$10 is kinda STEEP, but i guess that's belgium for ya!

i think it's $6.99 these days in the US. being cut into by a southern chain "cici's" which is 5x as big ("16 flavours") and a buck or two cheaper. expect them to hit europe in a few years.

SPAD: thanks for the report. which state is that?

fwiw, i'm hearing radio ads for an "IHOP buffet" lately.

i asked at my local branch, but i guess we're not participating. :(

every so often they do an all-you-can-eat promo on the pancakes, but i guess "buffet" must include eggs, sausage, etc as well.

    anyone WITNESSED this?
