Okay, so this started happening completely out of nowhere. I changed nothing in the week or so previous to this. At any given time, when I close a program (Windows Media Player and Firefox, mostly) my computer will freeze up completely. I have no idea what is causing it or how I can fix it. It doesn't happen every time, but whenever it does happen it's right when I close something. I thought maybe a corrupted video driver because it happened when I closed WMP mostly, so I uninstalled and reinstalled, and I installed a bunch of Windows Updates thinking it might fix it, and it seemed to be okay for a few days but just now it began happening again.

I'm not really sure what information I could provide to help, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what else I can do aside from formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows, which I just did about a month ago.

I have the exact same problem - after closing windows media player Win 7 freezes and i need to hard restart it. I've tried different players but this time pc automatically shutdowns during video playback.
My strong opinion is that ATi AViVO is cosing these problems. Can someone advise?

Unfortunately I found no solution to this, but it seemed to stop happening soon after I made this post. I have a feeling it had to do with a corrupt Windows Update, because that's literally the only thing that changed on my system before this started happening. I did a Windows Update once and it did nothing, but I did it again and now it's stopped happening, so give that a try if you haven't already.

Okay, so I thought this was fixed but it's not. It doesn't just happen when I'm closing WMP anymore, it happens randomly when I open/close/interact with a video of any kind, be it in Window Media Player, some other player, or in Firefox. Just completely freezes Windows and there's nothing I can do aside from a hard reset.

I got so fed up with it, I reformatted my whole hard drive thinking something deep in my system had just gotten screwed up... but now it just happened again. I have no idea what it could possibly be, because I have almost nothing installed. Does anyone have any clue what this could be? At all? Because I can't even begin to guess at this point and it's driving me crazy.

Since this is happening with a fresh system, I'd look to hardware. First thing to try is to test your memory for errors using memtest86+ (search for it at the MG home page).

Tested. Both modules came up clean.

Does it freeze in safe mode?

Not sure if this will help

    I've also seen solutions to:
    1. Change the computer power mode to "High Performance" and disable all sleep/hibernation/smart power saving features.
    2. Disable Services using BlackViper's guide
    3. Clean out msconfig
    4. Make sure the RAM voltage is set correctly according to the RAM manfacturer specification (if you allow the BIOS to do it automatically it will give it 1.8v by default, which is not enough for modern memory speeds and sizes).
