I am running Win 2k Pro SP4 on a Dell Latitude C860 laptop. I was experiencing very slow response times and no internet connectivity. Avast! reported that Alureon-DR was found in 1256326501.exe - only that file.

I downloaded the programs and performed the full procedure documented in "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide".

Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot all reported no infections. ComboFix reported that "c:\winnt\system32\comres.dll ...is infected!!"

All scans were completed up through and including MGTools. Another thread reported that the COMRES.DLL was a false positive from ComboFix and suggested replacing it by using SFC.

This procedure seemed to work well, I now have connectivity. Now I just need to know what to do about COMRES.DLL.

    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to attach the 5 requested logs (whether they find anything or not) for us to properly help you. However yes it is a false positive from ComboFix about the comres.dll file on Windows 2000. The file is not part of Windows 2000 and it is complaining about a file being infected that does not even exist.

Thanks, what you say makes sense. I've attached the scan logs.

Your logs are all clean. In the future you should be more exact in following instructions to get the proper results. Sometimes it will matter. You did not run ComboFix.exe from Desktop as requested even though you did save a copy to your Desktop. You ran it from here: f:\majorgeeks\ComboFix.exe Also you put MGtools.exe on your Desktop ( C:\Documents and Settings\Lou.DINGDONG\Desktop\MGtools.exe ) and you ran it from there and it belonged here: C:\MGtools.exe

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    chaslang,

Thanks eversomuch for reviewing my log files! I'm glad that they came up clean. I accept your admonishment - I will follow the cleanup protocol more carefully in the future (I hope I don't need to!).

I don't want to consume your time, you've been so helpful, but out of curiosity...
    1) what was going on with COMRES.DLL? Was there an actual infection? A bogus file? Or a false positive?

    2) Do you judge Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware to be superior to Avast? (I abandoned AVG Free because it was taking waaaay too many CPU cycles.)

    As I stated earlier
Thus it is just a bug in ComboFix.

Malwarebytes (MBAM) and SUPERAntiSpyware (or SAS) are antispyware/antimalware programs. They are not antivrus programs. Thus you are comparing apples to oranges. Avast includes antivirus and antispyware but the antispyware is not really as good as MBAM or SAS. Also remember that the free versions of MBAM and SAS provide no protection. They are just after the fact scanners.
