Strange Situation

Hello long-time friends ,

I purchased a DVD Burner, and installed it on my computer. I turned on the computer, and Windows XP PRO loaded as usual. Once in Windows, I went to My Computer to see the new drive; it wasn't there. Thinking that the cable hadn't been properly inserted into the DVD BURNER, I shut down the computer and pushed in the cable, making sure it was in properly.

Then I started the computer again, but I got a "DISK BOOT FAILIURE" error. I tried to change cables, restart, remove the drives ... nothing.

I then put the drive as a slave into another WINDOWS XP PRO machine. It detected, but in My Computer, the drive is shown as: "_ù½_r-¦r!¯(L" (attachment 1) .
The drive specs (size, etc) are also messed up (attachment 1)

All the folders inside are messed up as well, with strange dates.(att.2)
The size at the bottom is 514 GB, though the drive is only 160 GB. (att.2)


I restarted the machine and then another drive (in addition to L popped up; "LOCAL DISK M:"(att.3)

But when I click on LOCAL DISK M: I get attachment 4


I have tons of critical data on the drive, and do not have the resources to pay for a data recovery. I'd love to hear from you

try taking out the drive to see if the pc sorts itself out....

 

Sorry, I didn't get that .

These strange characters are appearing when the drive is in as a slave in another computer.

I am awaiting a response from Western Digital as well, perhaps they can help since it's still under warranty.

Wd has no dog in this fight, sounds to me like you hooked the dvd up to the hard drive cable, primary ide on the mother board is for the hard drive, secondary is for your burner, ^^^^^ what he meant was take the burner out[ unhook] and see if it works like before[pc] you installed it. ed

 

make sure you have the correct jumper settings as well and that your bios recognizes the drive properly.It has to be correct in BIOS before windows will let it work.

 

I made sure all the jumpers were correct, and all the cables were proper.

Anyways, I used a data recovery program on my second computer with the WD drive as a slave, backed up and burned all the stuff, and will now format the 160 and re-install everything.
