    Hello geeks,

Thank you for the valuable service you provide. My desktop was recently badly infected and nothing seems to be doing the trick.

I have followed all the listed steps to the best of my ability. (MGTools would not run, and SAS would only run in safe mode). I have attached my logs.

Please let me know what you suggest.

    Thanks,
    BigPampers

You have a new infection that we are struggling to deal with. At this point, however, our best help will be to remove the obvious malware and then have you save your data and files to a cd before you reformat and reinstall your OS. This virus overwrites your system files ( including the ones in your i386 folder) so that even if we replace the ones reported by Combofix, there will be others that would still leave your system unreliable to use.
    Let's do this first:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Nowtry to run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Okay - I ran the recommended steps. The registry entry was added successfully and Avenger ran and rebooted (log attached) however it didn't seem to phase the virus at all. Getlogs.bat still results in an instant reboot.

I have been able to severely slow the virus down by disconnecting from the internet, using the task mgr to stop all virus processes, deleting all instances of reader_s.exe and all .tmp files created in the system32 folder - then renaming cmd.exe. This however, also does not allow MGTools, Combofix etc... to run.

Any progress battling this one on your end?

I don't understand why you renamed cmd.exe. That will indeed stop MGtools and Combo from running. But, again, let me repeat that we are only trying to remove the obvious malware ...not make your system malware free, this is not possible with this infection. We just want you to be able to safely save your data and files before you do a reformat and reinstallation.

The virus used multiple instances of cmd.exe to reinstall itself. Renaming the file halted the return of the virus.

    Currently backing up and reformatting...

    Thanks for your help Tim.

Any recommendations for blocking this PARTICULAR type of malware? (beyond the sticky posted suggestions?)

We still do not know where this is coming from......we just know that it hits system files and there is nothing at this point that we can do to combat it. We are trying to find a way to strip the extra data off the files, but that could be very difficult as we are finding that it is now changing the size of what it adds to those files. :(
