    Hello.

I have an HP ze5385us with a broken LCD. The computer works just fine, and I'm currently just running it with my 19" CRT without any problems.

I'm getting a desktop computer in a couple weeks, and I'd like to move the laptop to my bedroom (where the space is very limited), running on an external LCD monitor.

My question is this: are there any known problems in removing the attached LCD screen altogether?

The cost of replacing the screen is prohibitive (unless someone knows of a generic screen that would work, I'd also be interested in that), so I'd just like to get it out of the way.

    Thanks in advance,

I would prolly just email HP and ask them if it works without the LCD. I know my Fujitsu does. Remember, curiousity killed the cat ;)

BTW HP usually use generic parts eg you can buy a combo drive for Laptop from HP for $405ex, or from a local supplier for the identical QSI combo drive for $103ex. So there is hope if ya willing to search.

Maybe ebay (or google), can help with a cheaper replacement. Baz

Ouch. If you manage to find out what the LCD controller is called, you might be in with a chance of finding a new screen. But once you've done that, you then would have to re-solder the ribon cable from the old LCD into the new one and that is - rather difficult.

    Eeesssh....

    Anyway.
I suppose you might be able to use it without the screen, but I'd rather not try it! It would look a bit weird too. A bit like an old Amiga or somthing :p

if you have a vga monitor out connector on the back you can hook up a regular monitor. it will usually switch to that external screen when the laptop screen is closed automaticaly. some laptops automaticaly go to standby or hybernation when the screen is closed, you may have to disable that in the power managment in windows.
you would then have to hook up an external keyboard and mouse since you would be using it with the lid closed.
after you get everything set up you can change the settings in the video card menu to allways use the external screen and be able to keep the lid open.
